Today's Must Read
Somebody had to do it. And hooray to the Center for Public Integrity and Fund for Independence in Journalism for doing it.
The groups counted and documented every Bush administration false statement made in the run up to the invasion of Iraq. Every one. It was a bit like counting snowflakes, to be sure, but here's what they came up with:
President George W. Bush and seven of his administration's top officials, including Vice President Dick Cheney, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, made at least 935 false statements in the two years following September 11, 2001, about the national security threat posed by Saddam Hussein's Iraq. Nearly five years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, an exhaustive examination of the record shows that the statements were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses. On at least 532 separate occasions (in speeches, briefings, interviews, testimony, and the like), Bush and these three key officials, along with Secretary of State Colin Powell, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, and White House press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Scott McClellan, stated unequivocally that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (or was trying to produce or obtain them), links to Al Qaeda, or both. This concerted effort was the underpinning of the Bush administration's case for war.
Or there's this, if you'd like a visualization:
You can relive every moment of the war hype on the site by watching videos, going over every false statement, and more. Remember Dick Cheney's "Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. There is no doubt he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies, and against us."? And President Bush's "We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories."? The project even comes replete with a search function.
(Unfortunately, CPI's site seems to be groaning under the pressure of interest in the project, so you'll have to be patient. It's been loading slowly this morning.)
And the White House's response to the study was as expected:
White House spokesman Scott Stanzel did not comment on the merits of the study Tuesday night but reiterated the administration's position that the world community viewed Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein, as a threat."The actions taken in 2003 were based on the collective judgment of intelligence agencies around the world," Stanzel said.

After all, everyone is equal, but the PIGS are more equal.... common folks will continue to pay consequences, but in countries such as ours where democracies fail, those at the top get to choose which laws apply to them... and lying to congress/the common folk, although explained in the federalist papers, no longer has any meaning or value in our present nation...
"WE the People" have decided we, for some insane reason, needed crooks and scroundrels (our Republican and Democrat parties) to lead and guide us. We are now just beginning to feel the results of our self centerdness and greed and fears and irresponsibilities.
It's going to be a slippery slope down to the bottom, folks,,, IMHO

It could be argued, yes, that there's more important business right now, actually. There's a very important election in November that is by NO means in the bag for the Democrats.
The Democrats needed to pursue impeachment and other processes to bring the Bush administration to justice, with relentless persistence, YEARS ago. Their non-stop whining about not having enough support has been a self-fulfilling prophecy. If they'd started the process and refused to give up on it, they would have rallied support by shining a constant spotlight on the Bush administration's wrongdoings.

I can see a million years ahead, and this rule will never change in so many as half a dozen instances. The loud little handful - as usual - will shout for the war. The pulpit will - warily and cautiously - object - at first; the great, big, dull bulk of the nation will rub its sleepy eyes and try to make out why there should be a war, and will say, earnestly and indignantly, "It is unjust and dishonorable, and here is no necessity for it." Then the handful will shout louder. A few fair men on the other side will argue and reason against the war with speech and pen, and at first will have a hearing and be applauded; but it will not last long; those others will outshout them, and presently the anti-war audiences will thin out and lose popularity. Before long you will see this curious thing: the speakers stoned from the platform, and free speech strangled by hordes of furious men who in their secret hearts are still at one with those stoned speakers - as earlier - but do not dare to say so. And now the whole nation - pulpit and all - will take up the war-cry, and shout itself hoarse, and mob any honest man who ventures to open his mouth; and presently such mouths will cease to open. Next the statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting the blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception." -Mark Twain, The Mysterious Stranger 1910

He took questions after his statement.
NOW the press is skeptical.

Where is the press, talking about Mrs. Clinton's "experience" without pointing out that she could not be bothered to read the 94-page NIE, while knowing that no staffer had clearance to read it. Where is Sen. Graham on this issue - he fought so hard to give the santors access. I BET that Sen. Clintons DID read the polls that day.... Past performance IS an indication of future returns, in this case. Experience we can surely miss. Judgement?!
