Cookie Krongard, In His Own Hand

When you talk to your brother on the phone, you take notes, right? Well, Howard "Cookie" Krongard does.

As we mentioned, Cookie's criminal attorney Barbara van Gelder sent Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) his notes of what brother Buzzy Krongard told him about Buzzy's relationship with Blackwater. We've added Cookie's notes to our document collection (read them here), along with van Gelder's request that Waxman stop investigating her client (read that here).

I, for one, envy Cookie's handwriting. Line one: Buzzy has "NO financial interest whatever" in Blackwater. Paragraph three: "Was on short list for Advisory Board position but is not taking it." That, of course, contradicts what Buzzy Krongard told me and Waxman and anyone else who'll listen. We'll see what he has to say about his brother's notes.

Looks like the note is short on dating? So when did Cookie write the note? Friday the 16th?

Ok, here goes for an amateur handwriting analysis (a first look).

All the words are going downhill.

Strangely, and out of character for the man, the letters lean left.

Right there he convicts himself!

Cookie, grammar please.

"No financial interest WHATSOEVER."

Your note, "No Financial Interest... Whatever" would seem to indicate that you were skeptical of your brother's claims.

I wouldn't be entirely surprised if yet another Bush administration official were so out of touch with reality that he wrote down exactly the opposite of what he was being told over the phone. (I'm not sure that gets you out of either a perjury charge or a false-information-to-congress charge, since you're neither insane nor misinformed.)

Of course faking the notes also seems like a reasonable way to go.

Why would a person take contemporaneous notes and not put a date on the document? Isn't that the whole point? Waxman is going to obliterate this guy.

I'll bet he forged notes from his mother to cut school too...

Wasn't Cookie responsible for withholding other notes (pertaining to the investigation) sought by the committee? Funny how some "investigatory" notes can come out, and some not at all.

Maybe his nickname has to do with the "cookie jar" - and fibbing?

If I were him, I'd stop taking notes on paper that has the TPM logo on it.

He has a criminal lawyer ??????????????

Why ?????????????

Funny how fast Bush people lawyer up.

I'm assuming the "Erik" in the notes is Erik Prince. These guys are on a first name basis??

What's all this stuff about rumors anyway? Bankers to the family? The Prince family? Pre 9/11 involvement?

And the question, why would anyone in their right mind join BW now (as in during the hearings, Nissour Sq. stuff), seems. "was just on board of a competitor" to BW? Which competitor?

I don't pretend to know the workings of power, but if these guys were salesmen in my living room, I wouldn't sign a thing

Why would a lawyer open their client up to perjury and obstruction like this so soon? Guess it must be the client calling the shots...

I was talking to my brother the other day and, well, let me check my notes . . .

Please. If there's any credibility to Cookie's claim that he took notes during the conversation, let's look at WHY.

When I take notes on a phone conversation, it's because there might be something that can come back later and bite me. If I talk with my insurance company or landlord, I make sure that I can make sure that whatever agreements are made by phone are held to, and taking notes--and dating the notes, noting the time as well--helps me do that.

So Cookie, just what did you discuss with Buzzy that would make you document his professions and promises? Were you starting to suspect that this cushy little job with State might actually be some kind of setup and that you're the fall guy? Maybe your nickname should be Patsy instead.
