Leahy Sets Confirmation Hearings for Mukasey

It's official: the confirmation hearings for Michael Mukasey to replace Alberto Gonzales as attorney general will begin next Wednesday, October 17. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) set the date today.

Leahy laid out the questions he'll have for Mukasey in a letter last week, in which he also indicated that Mukasey's confirmation will be considered separate from the administration's refusal so far to turn over documents concerning its warrantless surveillance program. When Mukasey's name was first announced by the president, Leahy said that his focus was on "securing the relevant information we need so we can proceed to schedule fair and thorough hearings." Now those hearings will apparently go forward without that information. Or as Leahy put it last week to Mukasey, "they have left you to answer the unanswered questions." We'll see how that goes.

I'll tell how it'll go. The democrats will confirm Mukasey, and the corrupt status quo will be upheld.

Because that's what congressional democrats do.

What a dumb ass. Not only did Leahy cave on the wiretapping docs but he chose not to dig in his heels on the torture memos where he would get more support.

I told you guys way back when that Leaky Leahy has no balls -- there's not going to be any INHERENT CONTEMPT proceedings against Rove or Miers either -- are you finally waking up to the fact the Dems played you in 2006?!

The have something on Leahy... watch how he acts: talks big, always backs down, always getting someone else to pass judgment...

Soembody's keeping him in line - Cheeny probably, nobody can be this weak 24hrs a day, not when they have nothing but stature and respect due for standing up.

He has something big at stake that he knows he can loose if he does'nt bend over... probably they'll turn on the smear factory and pay trolls like Jake to smear him... oh sorry, he's already smearing him... how much they pay you Jake? Enough to keep you in diapers?

Anyway, I say political blackmail is rearing it's ugly head.... watch how they act, over and over and over an over and over...

As always, I don't get paid to post here -- I'm retired, so I have plenty of time -- what's your excuse?

I think if they were being blackmailed, it would have been leaked somehow by someone. I'm afraid the majority put politics over the Constitution, listen almost exclusively to their consultants, and rake in all they can from lobbyists. I may be wrong, but I think they care more their lucrative positions than about their country.

Kent Mueller wrote on October 10, 2007 11:33 PM:

Most of the blackmail has been aimed at the GOP side of the aisle, do a search on Jeff Gannon, former White House Correspondent and poster boy of the ponyboy set. In fact it's amazing that almost if not all the GOP sex scandals have been revealed not by plan, it's almost like Rove or someone accidently released a spore into the air. Maybe the file is so thick by now that things just fall out.

That's how they're kept in line behind the policies of a failed and callow child-man of a President who is leading them and their party dangerously close to Whig-like oblivion.

The only thing that explains the Democrats constant caving on all of these issues is the fact that they're terrified of being painted as weak on terror; a long majority status seems assured while they try to walk a razors edge to 2008, trying to placate both the lost NASCAR dads who see a terrorist in every convenience store and this portion of their base which still worries about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, all that quaint stuff. If they pull it off, well...

Conventional wisdom is Hillary's in in 08, and you have to wonder about a deal; Bush immunity in return for greasing the skids for Clinton II. Hell, all Bush has to do is keep being Bush for 13 months and the GOP candidate is doomed. Perhaps they sold out the base to keep their asses out of jail. Hillary can't afford to look weak on terror or defense, especially as the first serious female candidate. Besides, she can already taste those expanded presidential powers. Doubt she'll give them up when she gets them. Very useful powers at re-election time. Take it from Karl.

At least the Mukasey hearings will be an opportunity to
air the sins of the Bush administration in review. Best guess is they approve him on little more than hollow promises to toe the line in the future after putting on a bit of high-sounding theater.

And nothing changes. A lot goes on, but nothing happens.

We're screwed!

Children please take a deep breath - inhale -exhale -
Good -now Jake can you & the other Trolls please take a seat . Thank you.
Please be advised that Leahey et al have not caved into Bushco . That we are currently in this kabuki dance called oversight - And that we are not seeing half of whats really on the table-in terms of what the Dems have got on the neocons. Recall -especially you Jakester -that it took a good while to bring down Nixon .
The is far ,far from over -
Patience is a virtue ,Revenge is a dish best served cold
(Abu Gonzales lawyered up for a reason-also keep an eye on Addington & Yoo- see when they seek counsel - )

You are mistaken. Leahy said there would be no hearings unless the White House surrendered the subpoenaed documents. Then he caved.

The rest is also predictably disgusting.

Christopher wrote on October 11, 2007 4:06 PM:

This is oversight. Tepid oversight because Leahy, said he would not hold confirmation hearings until White House complied with documents request and the White House has yet to produce any documents requested. Leahy, will ask a few questions and we can only hope they won't all be softball.

So, which one is it: a) Leahy caved, or b) Leahy did not cave?

Al in Austex wrote on October 11, 2007 8:43 PM:

TO Jakester ,Anonymous and any other lurkers who doubt that LEAHEY et al have the goods on Bushco, - please wait awhile -maybe even after the hearings to see who caved & who did not cave . Do any amongst us know for sure who the Hill Staffers have already interviewed regarding all the documents.
I will repeat again - we do not know - who has been deposed say from the DOJ'ers who were vehemently opposed to the TIA/TSP / Poindexter Data Mining/- do not rule out what FACTS ,DOCUMENTS & COLLOBORATION Goldsmith , Comey, and many others have given the Hill. And what about Ashcroft's underlings -its way ,way , too much "STUFF " for even Fred Fielding to keep up with ...What about the FBI Director Muellers closed door testimonty to the Oversight Committees regarding the Card , Gonzales skulk to see the bedridden former AG Ashcroft .
All you Trolls & Naysayers need to go check your Nixon Watergate TIMELINE -IT WAS A BUNCH OF Constitution LOVING GOP'ers that finally but an end to Tricky Dicky .
Abu Gonzales has lawyerd up for a reason
