Mukasey Makes His Case

With the impression of his independence firmly established, Attorney general-nominee Michael Mukasey makes the rounds. From Newsweek:

But in a series of private meetings arranged by chief of staff Josh Bolten prior to the nomination, Mukasey, 66, reassured top hard-liners, such as Federalist Society executive Leonard Leo and former A.G. Edwin Meese. According to three sources, who asked not to be named discussing the private meetings, Mukasey said that he saw "significant problems" with shutting down Guantánamo Bay and that he understood the need for the CIA to use some "enhanced" interrogation techniques against Qaeda suspects. Mukasey also signaled reluctance with naming a special prosecutor to investigate Bush-administration misconduct, according to one participant.

If Bush appoints someone, that person is unsuited to the office. This should be engraved on a plaque and given to every member of Congress for their office wall. This is well known by the Cheney cohort, and equally well known is that most Democrats know it well. So, that is why the switch to an even more unsuited acting AG. Now the only choice facing Congress is the lesser of the two evils - and if that choice is refused, a recess is looming.

"...signaled reluctance with naming a special prosecutor..." That is an extremely vague statement which actually says nothing. What signal was that? Did he yawn or what. Why would you throw such vague inuendos out there. Nothing mentioned in this piece really defines anything but vague notions intended it seems to get people talking in rumors. STFU if you have nothing concrete to say because it starts unnecessary rumors.

Hoppy has it right.
Mukasey is just a smarter criminal than Gonzales.
Of course no Dems have the cajones to describe him that way, they will be SwiftBoatMoveOn'ed.

That being said, I agree with hoppy in comment #2

Send Mukasey to the back of the line.

You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

Anyone expecting that a nominee by Shrub for AG will clean up abuses at the DoJ is invited to the participate in the sale of the GG bridge on ebay.

Bush, like Circe, turns people into pigs. Look at Powell, Rice, Snow, Gonzales and now Petraeus.

Bush, like Circe, turns the people he appoints and associates with into unprincipled pigs. Look at Rice, Powell, Gonzales and now Petraeus. He's very good at it and couldn't stop doing it if he tried. That's one reason why the Republicans amassed the greatest number of convictions and prosecutions of any Congress in recent times. Why should Mukasey be any different?

Well, yeah, he appointed him, of course he isn't going to investigate. He's just Bork to Nixon, but doesn't make you lose your dinner to look at him.

They can appoint the Maytag repariman for all I care. Nothing will change until January 2009. But, first, hand over the USA firings material. No? Fine, it's a standoff. Don't give these ratbags an inch, not a centimeter, not a millimeter, not an angstrom unit. Period. If they are appointed by Bush, that's pretty much a guarantee they are rotten.

From what I have read of his decisions thus far, he's far more straightforward, intelligent, and intellectually honest than Gonzalez ever was. So in that respect, this is a positive move.

But yes- he's a conservative republican at heart.

What the hell did you expect?
