NYT Weighs in on Siegelman Case

Today The New York Times gives a rundown of the controversy surrounding ex-Gov. Don Siegelman's (D-AL) prosecution, with the Republican lawyer at the center of the controversy set to trek to Washington to meet with a House Judiciary panel Friday.

The Op-Ed draws a comparison between Siegelman's prosecution and the case against Georgia Thompson, a civil servant in Wisconsin whose corruption case was thrown out on appeal because the court found the evidence against her to be "beyond thin."

The Bush administration insists that the United States attorney scandal is a non-scandal. But the Siegelman and Thompson cases are a reminder that when the power of the state to imprison people is put in the wrong hands, lives can be ruined and democracy can be threatened. Since the Justice Department refuses to appoint an independent prosecutor to examine whether these and other cases were politicized, Congress must provide the scrutiny.

For a more detailed discussion, listen to the "Democracy Now!" July interview of the reporter who has covered this troubling story for Harpers:

I think this is story that eventually put fredo and turd blossom in jail. Seems the evidence is outside the WH, which means its much harder to obstruct justice, and it leads directly to rove and fredo.
I hope both of them spend hours in jail before the chimp pardons them.

There have been many attempts to hurt and abuse Don Siegelman; however, he is like the Everready battery commercial “he just keeps on going“. That is the reason when Rob Riley was quoted as saying that Siegelman was like a cock roach you just can stop him. I said to myself that sounds like Don.

An elite group of politicians have evolved that is holding top state and federal offices. They are using the name of the GOP to control state and federal elections, federal courts and large government contracts. Karl Rove has been a major organizer in this movement.

It's a disgrace to us Americans that President Bush allowed Karl Rove (a political strategist) to use the resources and powers of the Attorney General. Nearly everyone agrees that the appointment of Gonzales was a ploy to get the Latinos votes and a front for Rove.

Why were Rove, the Department of Justice, and Bob Riley so concerned about Scrushy's donation to the Siegelman’s Alabama education lottery campaign? They believe that the state lottery in Alabama would have an impact on the Republican laundered cash flow from the Indian casinos.

The Mississippi Choctaw Indians said that since 1998 (the year that Siegelman was elected governor) that they have paid 13 million dollars to keep Siegelman from getting elected and to kill Siegelman’s free college scholarship lottery.

Many of Bob Riley’s past affiliates (Trent Lott, John Lundy, Toby Roth, Dan Gans, Dax Swatek, and Twinkle Andress) are now working for Mississippi Lobbyist or directly for the Mississippi Indians. Recently convicted lobbyist Michael Scanlon also started his career working for Riley.
