Chi Trib Rakes Muck on IL Rep's Land Deals

From The Chicago Tribune:

[Rep. Jerry Weller (R-IL)], a southwest suburban congressman with a fondness for Latin America, has sunk a large share of his investment capital into a land development in Nicaragua. But he didn't declare the extent of his holdings on his required congressional disclosures, and he indicated dramatically different purchase prices for the land in American and Nicaraguan records.... House ethics rules require representatives to disclose all property they own except for their personal residences.

Jerry Weller is perhaps the biggest sleaze in Congress.

He's married to Zury Rios Montt, the daughter of Efrain Rios Montt, a Guatemalan dictator who slaughter 200,000 indigenous people in his country during the early 80's. Zury is the head of her father's political party in Guatemala, and is one of the top legislators.

She was a top negotiator on CAFTA, as was Weller.

Weller refuses to disclose his wife's assets on his Federal disclosures. He claims he knows nothing about them, that they've never, ever discussed her finances.
He's scum, pure and simple.

Actually, the alt-weekly Chicago Reader, broke the Weller story nearly a year ago. Josh and the rest of his team, who are regularly dissed for breaking stories by the corporate media, no doubt appreciate the importance of giving credit where credit is due.

Here is the Reader's original article:

I am thinking he is doing this for one reason. He is going to get indicted. There is some stuff in the articles about his non disclosures and varying land prices that would get DOJ interested in Income Tax evasions charges. There was no inkling that he was going to resign before this, and one just doesn't give up like this, unless to know that DOJ is investigating him, or there are some signs they will indict him.
