Gonzales Continues PR Push
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales met with federal prosecutors here Wednesday, where he caused an uproar by firing U.S. Attorney John McKay last December. He also met with relatives of longtime Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Wales, who was shot to death at his Seattle home in October 2001. The murder remains unsolved, and Gonzales' now-former chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, suggested in a congressional interview that the reason McKay was targeted for firing might have been that he was too aggressive in asking for additional resources to investigate the crime.
"Bringing those involved in his killing to justice is of the utmost importance to the (Justice) Department," Gonzales said in a statement issued Wednesday morning. "Together, we will work as long and hard as it takes to solve this crime and prosecute those responsible."
Gonzales has testified that he was not aware of DOJ officials using the Wales case as a reason to fire McKay, whose former office remains recused from the investigation. McKay has suggested that Sampson made up that explanation to disguise what might have been the real reason for McKay's firing: His decision not to bring election fraud charges in the extremely close 2004 governor's election in Washington state, won by Democrat Chris Gregoire after two recounts.

Thanks for the heads up about Paul. I'll make sure someone answers the door for me from now on.
About McKay, in the aftermath of the mass U.S. Attorney firing, the Sampson/Goodling team met to come up with after-the-fact explanations for the firings. Someone in the group suggested a reason for canning McKay was because he was not married, implying that a single guy could handle the disruption in his life easier than a married guy.

Now why would the Justice League not go after someone who killed one of their own....unless they had something to do with it?

Did they do that with McKay as well? Wow, I hadn't heard that. It certainly appears to have been a factor in Daniel Bogden's firing in Nevada:
"A former high level department executive has told congressional investigators that a Justice Department team held a last-minute discussion after Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty said in an e-mail on Dec. 5 that he was "skittish" about firing Bogden.
"McNulty; his chief of staff, Keith Elston; Monica Goodling, a senior counsel to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales; and possibly one other official gathered in the office of Kyle Sampson, Gonzales' chief of staff.
"McNulty said he was concerned about Bogden, 50, getting a job outside government after 16 years at Justice and being able to care for his family.
"When it was pointed out that Bogden was not married, McNulty withdrew his concern and the conversation ended after about 90 seconds, according to the account gathered by investigators. Bogden was dismissed on Dec. 7."

He's wasting taxpayer money on this PR bullsh-t. The fact that he's drawing a salary for these cross-country vacations isn't good news either. It's an open secret that Gonzo was an absentee landlord at the DoJ even before the S.H.T.F. this year.

Thank you for the correction. The "unmarried guy" whose fate was determined after a 90 second discussion was Daniel Bogden, not John McKay.
Monica Gooding stated in her testimony that John McKay was spending an "excessive amount of time" investigating the murder of Thomas Wales (click on name). That may have been an unfortunate comment. It might lead someone to think that someone in main Justice did not want him on that case.

The interim top federal prosecutor in the Bay Area is leaving the post in mid-July, heightening the prospect that the Bush administration is on the brink of nominating a permanent U.S. attorney for the region.
In recent days, rumors have intensified in the legal community that the White House is prepared to forward the nomination of Joseph Russoniello, who served as northern California's U.S. attorney during the Reagan administration and sought the job again after this spring's ouster of U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan.
Lawyers and judges familiar with the situation say the Bush administration has been conducting the customary background check on Russoniello in recent weeks. Russoniello declined comment on Wednesday.
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford on Wednesday nominated Scott Schools, San Francisco's interim U.S. attorney,

Abu (I can't remember)Gonzales needs to be IMPEACHED, nothing less. He's a criminal and he lied to Congress. Good thing he's a Repuglithug.

I prefer he stay where he is: it keeps the issues alive and front and center, and continues to damage Bushit, et al., and the Republicans.
EuroTrash Johnny wrote on June 28, 2007 4:28 AM:Gonzales probably is indeed stupid, but in my view his larger problem is that he seems to be a psycho as well.
Whispers wrote on June 28, 2007 8:08 AM:Jnagarya: what is our goal, to have good government now, or to embarrass Republicans?
Gonzales is the worst AG in living memory. The nation should not be burdened with him for even just another 20 months.
Besides, driving him out of office makes the Democrats look like they stand for something other than the principle of leaving incompetents in charge to look good by comparison.
Jane wrote on June 28, 2007 9:36 AM:The goal is to take back our country in 2008 with politicians of whatever persuasion committed to honest elections.
Good government now is utterly impossible unless the whole incumbent administration is impeached.
While I would cheer myself hoarse were Congress to do that, I would also worry that unless a majority of the voters large enough to offset Rove and company's election stealing machine were similarly persuaded that this could jeopardize retaking our country.
