Specter on Gonzales Resolution: Oh, All Right
As the vote draws near, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) made it simple this afternoon: Republicans have no confidence in Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, but they're not going to vote that way, because that would hand a victory to Democrats. For his part, Specter is a reluctant supporter of the resolution, he said -- but don't expect others to follow him.
The vote is scheduled to commence shortly.
From Sen. Specter's remarks:
The thrust of the resolution, if it really seeks his ouster, is going to be a boomerang and is going to be counterproductive. My own sense is that there is no confidence in the attorney general on this side of the aisle, but that the views will not be expressed in this format. Already some who have called for his resignation on the Republican side of the aisle have said they will not vote for this resolution. Others have declined to comment about his capacity but have said that this is not the proper way to proceed, that our form of government does not have a no-confidence vote. Is the principle reason for this resolution to help the Department of Defense (sic) or to embarrass Republicans? I think, clear cut, it is designed to embarrass Republicans. It’s designed to embarrass Republicans if the Senate says they have no confidence in the Attorney General…Many on this side of the aisle, most, if not almost all, will vote against cloture here because there are ample reasons to vote against cloture. But as a I look at this matter as which is the more weighty, the more compelling, the more important – candidly stating that I have no confidence in Attorney General Gonzales or rejecting the outright political chicanery which is involved in this resolution offered by the Democrats, I come down on the side that the interests of the country and moving for improvements in the Department of Justice is to make a candid statement that I have no confidence in the Attorney General – which I have said repeatedly, it’s no surprise – and I am going to deal with this resolution on the merits and vote to invoke cloture.

When are Congressional Republicans going to hold this Administration accountable??
WHEN?
What has happened to 'The Rule of Law'??
If he or any of them had any courage, they would allow the vote, rather than to continue to apologize and enable this Administration's failures to Americans.
KCinDC wrote on June 11, 2007 5:53 PM:Moondancer, it's even worse this time. Specter starts off with a denunciation of Gonzales and a strong statement that he has no confidence in him, but then the whole rest of the speech is a list of talking points for the Republicans to use as they vote against it, including an attack on Chuck Schumer and the claim that this vote is purely a political exercise.
If Republicans have lost confidence in Gonzales but refuse to vote to express that opinion because of their fear of wingnut retribution for embarrassing the president, then Republicans, not Democrats, are the ones playing politics.

The answer, I believe, is two-fold. One, they're banking on most Americans being too busy with gas prices, barbecues, and Paris Hilton to notice or even give a shit. Two, they're hoping they can just continue to drown this out be endlessly repeating the "political theater" line for the handful of voters who are listening.
But like I said, they're boxed in. They SAY they have no confidence in Gonzo, or have issues with his questionable leadersip, or would even like him to step down, but they DO something entirely different, which is to vote in favor of his staying on. "Well, Mr. Republican Senator, if you're reelected can we continue to expect you to do the opposite of what you say?"
Damned by Bush if they do, damned by the voters in '08 if they don't.

That's exactly why I've said again and again people give Specter too much credit. He's a weasel and will always appear to go along with reasonable bipartisanship just long enough to monkey-wrench it and then pull a stunt like this to towards good old Republican partisanship.
I think we need to start distinguishing between real moderates and bipartisan thinkers, the people who actually work towards accomplishing common goals, and people like Specter and McCain, who are simply two-faced. They'll give lip service to anything long enough to scuttle it from within.

Contrary to Specter's whining, the purpose of this resolution is to force Republicans to go on record about whether they think Gonzales should remain in office, so that when he is impeached, those who don't think he should remain can be asked why they won't vote to convict.
This is only about "embarrassing Republicans" in the sense that it is an attempt to embarrass them into doing the right thing. Unfortunately, modern Republicans have no sense of shame, so when the choice is between the good of the country and the good of the party, they'll choose party over country every time.

The Oracle wrote on June 11, 2007 8:46 PM:P.S.
Lieberman is a warmongering disgrace.
Democratic Senators can do one thing immediately, either en masse or individually: any federal judicial nominee proposed by the most corrupt administration in U.S. history will NOT be given a nomination hearing until Alberto Gonzales resigns as Attorney General.
From reports, the Democratic-controlled Senate, since gainig control earlier this year, has accepted many more Bush administration judicial nominees, and seated them on the bench, than the Republican-controlled Senate did during the 1990s, when they blocked a large number of Bill Clinton's judicial nominees, many from even being given a hearing.
Now we know why.
The Republican strategy, dating back over ten years, has been to pack the federal judiciary with as many hardline, anti-abortion Republican jurists as possible, while (during Clinton's presidency) blocking any nominess not hardline, or anti-abortion, enough.
And this doesn't even address the blatant subversion of the Justice Department by Alberto Gonzales, Kyle Sampson and Monica Goodling, with their packing the DOJ in a partisan fashion from top to bottom, and trying to freeze out any Democrats, or liberal progressives, from the department.
Therefore, any patriotic U.S. Senators that remain (obviously not Joe Lie-berman) should return the favor, telling the Bush administration, that either Alberto Gonzales goes, or there will be no further federal judicial confirmations while Gonzales remains as Attorney General.
As long as Gonzales remains as Attorney General, then he will continue to commit the partisan criminal acts at the DOJ that have been disclosed over the past several months, as well continuing to subvert our Constitution as the top "law enforcer" of the land...with his and the "culture of corruption" Republicans obsessing over the November 2008 elections...and how they can use the DOJ (as they have in the past) to "fix" the election and assure a Republican win.
This is why Democratic Senators must give the White House an ultimatum of this nature regarding Alberto Gonzales.
In fact, Democratic Senators (after the failure of this no-confidence vote) don't even have to make their ultimatum public. They can send a private message to Bush, Cheney and Gonzales laying out what they will do (stop the judicial nomination process until Bush leaves office) unless Alberto Gonzales immediately turns in his resignation.
One Democratic Senator can stop a nomination, as we all learned during the Clinton years, with so many of his judicial nominees never even receiving the courtesy of a hearing before the U.S. Senate.
It's time for Democrats in Congress to play hardball.

Whatever motives there are do not erase the lies, the misuse of the DOJ by Karl Rove who is leading Gonzo around by a leash, the ruined careers of attorneys for political reasons, or the mismanagement of the department by an incompetent AG. Specter is essentially saying because there's some perception of a conflict of interest on the part of Schumer, we are going to let a man who has destroyed the DOJ continue to do so, and to hell with what's good for America and to hell with DOJ employees who are looking for leadership. Because, you see, it's all about Schumer now.

For him to quote unnamed "others" as saying "our form of government does not have a no-confidence vote" and using that as justification for this kind of BS just makes me ill.
JNagarya wrote on June 12, 2007 1:42 AM:The Dems should have written the No Confidence vote in the affirmative: "The senate has supreme confidence in the veracity and credibility of Gonzalez". The vote would be 0-100.

False. What we need now is intelligence, not knee-jerk/conformist bashing.
Is that too much to ask?

Specter shouldn't use the word "chicanery" to describe what Democrats are doing. That's the proverbial pot calling the kettle black.

Since Department of Justice is totally out of control Congress should vote to withhold funding for the Department of Jsutice (DOJ).
This action would serve to solve the US Attorney crisis, would discipline Mr. Gonzalez and bring the FBI to heel. Oh and it would protect Congress from any more embarassing indictments.

Specter will vote against Gonzales
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON — Senator Arlen Specter, R-PA, the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said today he will vote no confidence in Alberto Gonzales, after long questioning the leadership and independence of for a no-confidence resolution against Attorney General President Bush's longtime friend.
Specter said he's concerned like others in his party that the resolution, sponsored by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. and up for a test vote later in the day, was a Democratic effort to embarrass Bush and prompt Gonzales to resign. But Specter has long said Gonzales has exercise poor leadership on a host of issues, from the firings of eight federal prosecutors to the department's handling of wiretapping authority under the Patriot Act.
"If you ask Arlen Specter, do I have confidence in Attorney General Gonzales, the answer is a resounding no," Specter said during a news conference in Philadelphia. "I'm going to vote that I have no confidence in Attorney General Gonzales."
Gonzales showed no sign of stepping down, and Bush continued to support him.
"I am not focusing on what the Senate is doing," he said at a nuclear terrorism conference in Miami.
Despite Specter's decision and calls by five other Senate Republicans for Gonzales' resignation, no one was predicting the symbolic no-confidence resolution would survive even the test vote today.

NOW are we talking in circles with this no vote thing, or is there a FIFTH bullet that we have to find????
This is insane!

That Gonzale's fate should be in "Bush's hands" is what got us into this mess in the first place.
You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.
