WSJ: Former Rove Aide in Talks with Thompson Campaign

The Wall Street Journal reports (sub. req.) that Timothy Griffin, the former aide to Karl Rove who became one of the most controversial figures in the U.S. attorney firing scandal, is in talks with Fred Thompson's presidential campaign:

Backers look for Fred Thompson to use a June 2 speech to Virginia Republicans to step closer toward the race. Thompson allies have had discussions with Tim Griffin, the Arkansas U.S. attorney and Rove protégé, about taking a top job with the campaign.

Griffin, of course, was installed as the U.S. attorney for Little Rock last year. Emails from Kyle Sampson have shown that the Justice Department and White House were plotting to use a little noticed provision in the USA PATRIOT Act Reauthorization Bill to keep Griffin in place throughout Bush's term without the need for Senate confirmation. Alberto Gonzales has somewhat unconvincingly disavowed the plan.

But when that scheme was revealed, Democrats successfully pushed for the law to be changed back to the way it was -- a final version passed the House last week. As a result of that, Griffin will be forced out of office in four months or so. Apparently Griffin isn't waiting around for that. The Arkansas Times blog cites sources saying that Griffin may leave the job shortly.

Put Thompson on the list of Repug candidates who cannot be trusted to follow the Constitution or hold a fair election.

McCain probably would.

Mitt Romney on the basis of pandering and the Guatanamo II comments probably would not.

Would Ron Paul hold a fair election? He does seem to tell the truth as he (weirdly sees it).

Any chance of getting Thompson on the record on the shenanigans at Justice in general and the hiring of Griffin in particular?

It's pretty amazing to me that apparently Thompson et al don't think that Griffin is politically radioactive. It just goes to show he's confident that the press will continue to roll over for him (see e.g. http://www.dailyhowler.com/dh052107.shtml ). He's probably right.

The brazenness of these people are nothing short of breathtaking. Not only has Fred Thompson been one of the few people on Scooter Libby's Defense Fund Committee to come out publicly in that role, but he looks to Rove for recommendations on setting up a campaign staff. The gene pool is really shrinking with these people--and does not augur well for future political IQ.

Either way, it speaks to whom Thompson will bet with, and what he'll wake with.

It is time to get his fanny in the witness chair so that we can all learn that "caging" is not a direct marketing term and that Tim Griffin was the chief cage master and was installed specifically to enforce the phony "election fraud" scandal.

I suspect we may see some direct quotes from Dobson and others about the merits of a Thompson presidency; they've been pretty luke-warm on their options so far. We'll see...

Good point Woodhall Hollow about Thompson's public defense of Scooter Libby. I'd forgotten about that one. Or on a more trivial level his ostentatious smoking of Cubans (in violation of the trade embargo). The brazenness is remarkable. It really tells you a lot about the kind of lap dogs he thinks the press will be for him. I hope (but don't particularly expect) he's wrong. It's up to the blogosphere to force the media's hand here and make them actually report.

What Romney and McCain and Guiliani seem to not understand is nothing matters about your campaign or your policies or platform. Once Big Business get's behind you, you are The One. The rest get cast aside, no matter what the Republican rank and file want.

What a joke, the republican horserace. The Dems already have a bought and paid for process, but it is not ironclad and the right candidate can smash their whole system. The Reichwingers, however, are entirely beholden to the Corporatist machine. Whichever candidate get's advanced by the Corporatists WILL be the nominee. There IS NO OTHER outcome in the republican process...the Anointed Corporatist WILL BE the nominee.

My guess is Frightful Fred knows this and hasn't made a single step that wasn't reinforced by his talks with The Powers. His slow movement to Announcing is a product of The Powers deciding they cannot go with McRomneyAni. It is OBVIOUS that none of these guys has the right STUFF to be a corporate puppet master. GWB was a perfect corporate PUPPET but hugely incapable and incompetent. The Powers are certain they are getting a much more EFFECTIVE and masterful tool inserted into the WH this time.

The curtain has been drawn back, and a know-nothing pawn who pretends not to be a corporate flak is just not useful anymore. The mask is off, why pretend like it isn't? say the corporatists. Fred can act all nicey nice...if that works for awhile....but he'll do right by us even if the whole disguise is not working. They need someone in office who can think on his feet and stay out of all the crap LeChimp stumbles into. Seriously folks, where do you think the corporo-fascist take-over would be right now if there was someone other than a 3rd Grader in the Oval Office? Sure Cheney has been riding herd at the WH but he is not the best tool or first choice. Too unpopular, too much corporate baggage, etc.

Anyways, we are wasting ink and kilobytes worrying about McRomneyAni. The only criterion for the corporotists is can you carry corporate water, and are you electable. McRomneyAni is NO on at least 1 out of 2. And the idea of Thompson saying "you mealy mouthed traitor of a liberal" at debates and on the stump has the corporatist's mouths watering. They know McRomneyAni would be very vulnerable in debates, etc...but that Thompson can carry-off just the part they want him to play. He's a more likeable, less viagra'd up version of Rush Limpbow with a legal degree.

See how he has flakked for Libby and derided MM's 'Sicko' for all you need to know about Fu*$cked Up Fred. Hopefully those two stories alone will follow him on the campaign trail.

The original company behind the coal power plant was Enron. It's undergone a couple of transfers since. GenPower was one of the other groups named in the suit.

Needless to say, there's a high probability that the non operational plant is being allowed to sell emissions credits under the EPA rules to other operational facilities...

So Griffin is probably poisoning air in up to three other states while he's covering for a group with ties to jeb's state.

Then he's going to bail and work with Fred Thompson. The Little Rock district also won a suit vs. a Diebold subsidiary from Dallas TX, Sequoia voting technology. The former Sec. of State for Arkansas was ousted over its kickback scheme.

How come all the right wingers do is bad mouth hollywood, but they have no problem running members of hollywood for Pres, Governor, etc., so I guess they are only "liberal nutcases" as long as it's not one of their candidates? Just goes to show you how corrupt this party is, they spew bible verses out of one side of their mouths and hatred out the other. If Thompson is the best they have to offer they need to take a long vacation from politics, to the joy of the majority of Americans! How about they start by taking boy George and Darth Dick with them, Oh Rove to, the poster boy for vile pigs! Grannysue

David Vandergriff wrote on May 31, 2007 3:59 PM:

Fred Thompson just lost the race as far as I'm concerned. I would have never voted for him anyways, but now I will actively campaign against him. Neither Rove or any of his lackeys should ever be aloud near the whitehouse again or Washington for that matter.

So Fred Thompson is going to hire Tim Griffin? Given the news of the past 96 hours, I think Fred better reconsider.

He might do better with Ted Kaczinski (the Unabomber) as his Communications Director.

Or maybe Lindsay Lohan as the director of his "Just say no" campaign.

Or maybe Paul Wolfowitz as the leader of his Foreign Policy shop, or his "Ethics in government" initiative.

Or how about Mark PedoFoley as the head of his "Children First" initiative?

Steve Smith wrote on June 8, 2007 2:52 PM:

I have to ask, is just a rant blog? Fred Thompson, the current chair of the International Security Advisory Board (bi-partisan) has almost as good a resume as Richardson. The difference is that Fred has a lot of unpaid positions to his credit. "Big business" did not pick Fred Thompson. He has a volunteer network of thousands promoting his candicacy nationwide. All of this is easily found with a few clicks. That wasn't a Cuban cigar in the video, and the video was a joke. Most people got it. Moore got all the credit he deserves. The movie Sicko is extremely offensive to those of us with relatives from and in Cuba who know what lies beyond the trendy propaganda that the stunningly uninformed buy into. It's criminal that people like Michael Moore are encouraged.
