Hagel: Gonzales "Should Resign Now"

Looks like James Comey's testimony yesterday has added new momentum to the already crowded Gonzales resignation bandwagon. Here's Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) today:

“The American people deserve an Attorney General, the chief law enforcement officer of our country, whose honesty and capability are beyond question. Attorney General Gonzales can no longer meet this standard. He has failed this country. He has lost the moral authority to lead. Comey’s testimony yesterday brings to light the latest episode in a series of questionable actions by Attorney General Gonzales. It is another part of a pattern of flawed decision making by the Attorney General.

“America is a nation of laws. In the interest of the American people, Alberto Gonzales should resign now."

What is shocking is not Hagel's sudden conversion, but that fact that so very many have not yet seen the light. Let's get rid of that embarrassing little crook.

This administration saying "the buck stops here" might as well be saying "the bus stops here". There has never been any accountability.

It's interesting that one can substitute "President* Bush" for all references to this specific AG in this statement, and have it be just as true, and for the same reasons.

DNS wrote on May 16, 2007 12:17 PM:

... and what about Bush? He implemented a program that he knew violated the law. Impeachment should proceed immediately

Agathena wrote on May 16, 2007 12:18 PM:

YES! Let's get the little back-room-hack off our tv's. His overexposure is not doing him any good. Everytime I see his face, I think of, torture, habeas corpus, firing competent attorneys, serving the worst president in history, doing ANYTHING that worst president wants at all costs. And now slithering into an intensive care unit to get a sick man to sign a warrantless domestic spy bill.

Make him go away.

Does anyone know if a running tally of who in congress (both senate and house) has already called for Gonzo to resign?

It would be interesting to know which Dem's haven't called for his resignation yet. I already know the lockstep repugs are holding out.

rmadilo wrote on May 16, 2007 12:21 PM:

The focus on Gonzo is misplaced. The conduct involved is so severe no president should accept a resignation: he should be fired. Only by firing can the president signal that the conduct is not wanted. But his _decision not to fire_ is what should be reported. That is a decision. And if in the future a resignation is accepted, the conduct remains okay. He just got caught. The decider likes the conduct.

Hallelujah brother! Talk about scandalous behavior on the part of the (now) attorney general, WH chief of staff and (probably) the president himself who apparently made the phone call that set this whole sordid scenario into motion. Hope Hagel is not alone in recognizing how ugly and inappropriate this incident was and in demanding Gozales finally be held accountable for his loathsome acts. It makes my flesh crawl that someone who clearly has no moral or ethical boundaries is in charge of establishing and enforcing this country's legal boundaries.

Um, the latest episode? Don't think so, Dude.

Just the latest testimony on one of his earlier episodes.

There are many other episodes - and we won't hear testimony on them for another two years or so at this rate.

Mark-NC wrote on May 16, 2007 12:23 PM:

Gonzales might be a pig, but the reality is that he was CHOSEN because he's a pig.

Bush got just what he wanted - an AG who doesn't give a damn about the law or the country.

Gonzales is doing the bidding of Bush - nothing more, nothing less.

A man of honor might heed Sen. Hagel's call, but "Torture Boy" has proven again and again that he has no honor, only an obsequious, toadyish loyalty to Dumbya.

MaxGowan wrote on May 16, 2007 12:31 PM:

Yeah, Hagel, the born-again Christian for torture.

But if Hagel is coming out against Gonzo, then it is definitely time for a formal impeachment proceeding to commence.

And the other issue, beside torture, where the Dems need to distinguish themselves (let's just run John McCain's comments from last night's debate), is habeus corpus.

I agree that Gonzales will not recall that episode, when eventually asked about it.

And if you guys think Hagel's word will move Gonzo, I've got a surprise for you. NOTHING will bump out Gonzo. Nothing. He will never resign. And never be fired.

Gonzales is the firewall - it is now his job to stonewall and delay and ignore for as long as possible in order to protect Rove, who in turn, is the firewall for the White House. They cannot allow Gonzales to be taken down, or the entire house of cards may tumble.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is now giving Alberto until Friday to comply with the subpoena he was supposed to have complied with by yesterday. I suspect the response will be either (crickets chirping) or a lame reason why the e-mails and other docs cannot be produced. Then, it's back in Leahy's court, and what will he do?
Go to court over it? Give him yet another deadline?

Maybe Goodling's testimony will make Gonzales-as-firewall irrelevant, but I have not heard when she will be appearing before the committee.

It depends how many on the committee, and in the full Senate, are for action, and the kind of action a majority will support; and the majority can only move as fast as the slowest member of it. Intensive discussions and negotiations are going on behind the scenes.

"Maybe Goodling's testimony will make Gonzales-as-firewall irrelevant, but I have not heard when she will be appearing before the committee.

Go read a few books about Watergate and discover how much power Congress actually has. And keep in mind that Congress is comprised of individuals with different perspectives, different constituencies. Attempting to get Congress to act in concert before it is ready is like attempting to herd cats -- and will backfire.

Congress is co-equal with the Executive, regardless the view of the Executive on the point. The more pissed off We the people are -- not at Congress; that's dumb -- the more proper We the people will recognize the actions taken by Congress once it has its ducks in a row.

Comey's testimony was only given yesterday -- it hasn't entirely sunk in yet; and it is to be coordinated with existing evidence. But the White House has now lost, at very least, Specter -- and that's huge -- and Hagel. Specter has, at minimum, the senior Senator authority to persuade other Reppublicans to move beyond backing away from Bush, et al., to taking a position, taking action. The action has yet to be decided and agreed upon by sufficient majority.

And everything th Congress does must be ssolid so it stands up not only in court, but also in the court of public opinion. The majority of We the people opposed the Clinton impeachment because that majority saw it for the lynch-mob abuse of power it was. We don't want that to hapopen this time around.

It's correctly said that the chair of the House Judicary Subcommittee which investigated the impeachment of Nixon knew going in that it was "an impeachment Congress". Doubtless others also realized it. However, it took time -- public testimony, gathering of and publicizing evidence, and debate -- to persuade and bring along sufficient other House members to the point that there were sufficient votes to impeach.

Believe it: Congress has awesome power, including means to enforce subpoenas. (It wouldn't make sense for Congress to have subpoena power if it didn't also have power to enforce them.) Be patient, and watch.

And keep the pressure on your Senator and representative.

SC = roll. As in, Congress is beginniong to rise up and get on a roll.
