McNulty Resignation to Lead to Confirmation Battle

So Paul McNulty is on his way out, but as The Washington Post points out, his successor's confirmation is likely to be a flash point in the battle between the White House and Congress:

McNulty's pending departure may add to the tumult at the upper reaches of the Justice Department, where only Gonzales and a handful of others involved in the prosecutor dismissals remain. Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (Vt.) and other top Democrats have indicated that they will not confirm any senior Justice nominees until they receive e-mails they have demanded from the White House and are allowed to conduct interviews about the firings.

Since McNulty has signalled that he'll remain in place until the administration nominates a successor, he could be there for a long while.

What about a recess appointment?

Keep an eye on Arlen Spector's staff this time around!

Someone's out there working a policy window for "interim appointment authority" for Deputy AG's, for sure!

isn't it obvious? no recess!

word is "grip" - get a grip, congress! Stay there!

THeraP has the idea. There is plenty to do in Washington during vacation time. Why not have a party or to on the Whitehouse lawn.

Wow, this didn't take long...

Gonzo ALREADY trashing his Deputy, placing all the blame on him. I called this yesterday, but I didn't think it would happen this fast. These guys are unbelievable.

If McNulty was kept out of the loop on the firings, how could he possibly be to blame for them?

His email trail shows him in the loop, with an inconvenient conscience:

According to NPR (Nice Polite Republicans?), McNulty is staying on "through the summer". What do you bet he resigns just in time for Congress to adjourn. It's plotted so it will be recess appointment.

Maybe the good McNulty knows by summer the president will be Peolsi.Bushco seems to be in the last throes what with the prez. openly drinking , slurring his words and acting stupid. Wonder if the people who let kkkarl put Bush in have any regrets?

I have to agree. The Congress should continue to sit until such time as Gonzalez has resigned or been kicked out via impeachment. They should then remain in session until a successor has been confirmed by the Senate. If that takes 1.5 years, I'd support them in sticking it out.

Criminality in the executive officers of the United States should not be tolerated. It is really, really simple. Plus, if the Congress stays in session, think of all the work that could be done? And all the money saved for the presidential campaigning. Works for me.

A. History will be very kind should they decide to become the "No Recess Congress"

B. I can't wait to watch the confirmation hearings.

McNulty should have to remain in his office until the blindfolds and bullets are delivered and the block wall is built.

Gonelawless should be called before a committee or four every farging day for ten hours o' grilling then be lead back to his jail cell to await the next days line of questioning. Wash, rinse and repeat.

As of 2PM EST today, Abu Gonz is now in contempt of congress for failing to turn over the DOJ documents Leahy has subpeona'd. So, under the little used rule called Inherent Contempt, they COULD imprison him if they so chose.

code word: crime

Can a newly appointed Deputy Attorney General influence the outcome of the Aipac/Rosen/Weismann espionage trial?

Is this why Bill Kristol was so excited by the AG scandal? Did the Israeli Lobby want to take out McNulty? How many prosecutors are there in the upcoming trial?
