Gonzales Favorite Also Allegedly Hired GOPers
The Justice Department's inspector general is reportedly investigating whether Monica Goodling inappropriately considered political affiliation when hiring entry-level assistant U.S. attorneys.
So now seems like a good time to recall a story I ran two weeks ago about Bradley Schlozman, who was then the second in command at the department's Civil Rights Division. A former Justice Department lawyer, Ty Clevenger, says that Schlozman asked him whether a potential applicant was a Republican before deciding whether to interview him.
And where does Schlozman work now? After a controversial stint as U.S. Attorney for Kansas City, he now works in the Executive Office of United States Attorneys. Salon has quoted a former senior Justice Department official as saying that Schlozman was "one of Gonzales' guys."
What Schlozman allegedly did is against the law. So is anyone investigating that?

I think you should note that there's a Marsha Clevenger who is an Assistant US Attorney in the Criminal Division, Executive Office for US Attorneys - ED Arkansas.
That is the Eastern District of Arkansas which is the home office of bogus interim US Attorney Tim Griffin.
So might be helpful to also consider how Ty Clevenger himself got into the DOJ... Is Marsha Clevenger a GOP standard bearer? Is she a career employee, enthusiastic about her work and asked her son to apply but then saw the Bush Admin's destruction?
And did Ty Clevenger come in under the "very special intern program" structured for GOP applicants.
More info, please.

Clevenger was published by the Regent Law Review as a contributor from Stanford. That said, I too find it odd that he's seek out such a rightwing forum to publish his article - which essentially digs at the "homosexual agenda."
I'm happy that critics are emerging from the mess of the Bush Administration, but Clevenger's word is not one I'd hang my hat on.

bob wrote on May 3, 2007 6:10 PM:From this interview with Clevenger http://www.abovethelaw.com/2007/01/ty_clevenger_v_shanetta_cutlar.php
We asked Clevenger this question:
"Exactly how did the search of your office and the firing go down? It seems rather shocking for a government lawyer to be fired so quickly, especially after sending a letter of complaint to the DAG. It seems like basically a recipe for trouble for the people behind the firing."
Ty Clevenger's response to our query, after the jump.
Clevenger answered our question as follows:
You've asked the million-dollar question (no pun intended -- punitives will be limited to $300K), and I'm really not sure of the answer. I hope to learn more when DOJ responds to my FOIA requests.
As for the sequence, I e-mailed the letter to the DAG around 10 a.m. on 10/4 and left work around 6 or 6:30 that evening. The next morning, I noticed my desk drawers had been left open, and the contents had been shuffled around. Shanetta had a reputation for searching the offices, e-mail, etc. of her enemies, and I figured she was just jerking my chain.
About 3:30 p.m., Shanetta called me into her office, where an HR person and two lawyers from the Employment Section were waiting. She said she had previously told me my performance was unacceptable (never any specifics and never anything in writing), and she said I could resign or be terminated. I said I would resign.
The HR lady read through her standard script, then said she thought that covered everything. I told her I had something to say (and yes, I remember this verbatim):
"An old Army colonel told me many years ago that everybody is a sinner, but some folks are just downright evil. Shanetta, you are downright evil, and one of these days God is going to judge you for it."
She said something about that just confirming her assessment of me, and I got up to walk out. As I left, I told her I would see her on Judgment Day. That felt good. Really good.
And yes, you can quote me on anything above.

schlozvictim wrote on May 3, 2007 10:25 PM:Clevenger's report is the tiny tip of the huge Schlozman iceberg. Schlozman ran a clear and unabashed effort to bring in people based on his perception of their political views. Even worse, he used his power to harass and purge those in the Division that he thought might disagree with him politically.
Anonymous wrote on May 4, 2007 10:31 AM:TPM! You're distorting your own account of what Clevinger said. You are now saying that Schlozman specifically asked if a new hire was a Republican or not. But that is not really the way you covered the story earlier. You reported . . .
"But when Schlozman called back, "he wanted to know if [my friend] was a Republican." Clevenger couldn't remember the exact words Schlozman used, but said "it was very clear. It was something like, 'Is he one of us? Is he friendly?'"
So by Clevenger's own recollection, Schlozman did not **specifically** ask if a potential new hire was a Republican. There may have been an "implication" by Schlozman that he wanted to hire Republicans only, but Clevenger himself doesn't seem to be stepping out and saying that Schlozman directly asked about the new hire's political affiliation. Heck, maybe Schlozman was being super sneaky, but maybe he was asking if the applicant shared is right-wing views on Civil Rights enforcement w/out specifically asking about party affliation.
Also, you keep calling Schlozman one of "Gonazles' guys" but you repeatedly fail to mention that Schlozman came to DOJ to work for one of Ashcroft's senior deputies.
Come on TPM -- give it to us straight and brutally honest, we can hack it.
