Doolittle Resigns Appropriations Panel Seat
Rep. John Doolittle, R-Calif., has decided to temporarily give up his seat on the House Appropriations Committee after FBI agents searched his house as part of a congressional influence-peddling investigation.Doolittle's decision, to be announced Thursday, was confirmed by a Republican congressional staffer who spoke on condition of anonymity because the news was not yet public.
That would be the same appropriations seat which he used to help steer $37 million to Brent Wilkes (who's accused of bribing Duke Cunningham), and another $400,000 to Jack Abramoff's client, the government of the Marianas Islands.
Update: More from Roll Call:
While Doolittle is expected to voluntarily take himself off the panel while the investigation continues, knowledgeable House sources said that Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and members of the Republican Steering Committee -- which determines committee assignments -- were prepared to remove him from his post if he would not do so himself.

and to think we wouldnt be where we are if the Republican Congress had done their jobs providing oversight. Unbelievable!
I guess Doolittle's brilliant idea of pinning everything on his wife didn't go over so big with the GOP.

Gonzales allows the raid to go forward on a Rep. rep after sitting on it for how long in a district that is 60% Rep. with a Rep. governor, days before his hearing?
See, we go after everyone!

US-A's coverage is not coterminus with federal representative's district boundaries, but you will recall that Ryan, the only US-A that appears to have been removed because he actually sucked, reassured the DOJ that he was still a "company" man.
The question is, was Doolittle within Ryan's jurisdiction? If so, did Ryan sit on the raid on Doolittle's home until after the election? If not Ryan, who was in charge of this investigation as was it slow walked at the behest of Rove et al?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Perhap the remaining Republicans can run for office in 2008 under the Conn. 4 Lieberman banner.
Kali wrote on April 19, 2007 2:59 PM:Correct me if I am wrong, but the Doolittle case would not originate here in N. Calif. It is in DC and involves all the investigators from the DoJ div. that investigates federal corruption. Doolittle's lives in Virgina and that is where they raided his home.

Goodbye Auburn Dam. Goodbye John Doolittle.
Marcus Sitz wrote on April 19, 2007 3:09 PM:Doolittle's district is in the jurisdiction of the Eastern California USA, who sits in Sacramento.
Dolittle spends little time in his district however; his money, and interests, are all within the Beltway.
I like Charlie Brown's chances in a special election. He's a retired cop, a retired Air Force officer, and the parent of an active-duty serviceman who has done his duty in Iraq. Brown relates well to a district which has born more than its share of the burden in Iraq.
Doolittle, meanwhile, has done nothing for his district for many years. His main gig has been touting the Auburn Dam has a flood control solution, mainly to provide a bit of extra water rights to developers in his district. With his electoral base stuck in a horrible twice-daily traffic jam between Sacramento and his developer friends' handiwork in Lincoln, this is a connection which is starting to smell as bad as the perspiration in a northern-Marianas sewing shop. Finally, he was part of the lame-duck Congress which failed to renew the Federal funding to the rural schools in the eastern , forest-service-dependent, and most conservative part of his district. This funding is, btw, in the funding bill now awaiting Bsh's veto.
Security code sound. I sing to the sound of a Chuck Berry classic:
Kali wrote on April 19, 2007 3:11 PM:Bye bye Johnny, goodbye Johnny Do Less.
christomento,
Even though Doolittle was also involved with Brent Wilkes, this action and raid appears to be more involved with his Abramoff connections, due to the resignation of Kevin Ring. If we hear of Ed Buckhamm being indicted and Brent Wilkes being linked then we will know that the Doolittle's actions here will be coming to light. Ed Buckhamm introduced Brent Wilkes to John and Julie Doolittle.

As for Dan Walters' take (and Dan Weintraub's), I'm sure they're just waiting to get their talking points from Uncle Karl on the Doolittle matter.
Mrs Panstreppon wrote on April 19, 2007 3:17 PM:When I read yesterday that the FBI was searching Doolittle's house for more info about his wife's other clients besides Abramoff, I wondered if any of this has to do with Julia Doolittle's association with a company named Tech Travelers Inc.
Julia Doolittle's name and home address are on the Tech Traveler VA corporate registration. What is even more interesting is that Tech Travlers CEO, Thomas Murray, is a neighbor of the Doolittles.

eddie wrote on April 19, 2007 3:40 PM:Resigning one of the most prize seats (Appropiations) in Congress is not good for Doolittle. Either Bohner knows something the general public doesn't know and forced Doolittle out, or Doolittle knows that he is going to be indicted anyway, and is doing less damage by resigning now then waiting to be indicted... One doesn't give up a seat on Appropiations without a fight, given how much money a congressman can get for his campaign fund on Appropiations, and the power and goodies he can get for his district. Kevin Ring may know some secrets other than Abramoff's activities. There is also the Hurwitz affair, which could be an obstruction of Justice charge.
Doolittle wouldn't resign his seat unless he knew he was getting indicted, and the DOJ and the FBI have the goods on him. Abramoff would probably gladly testify against Doolittle if it means he can get some of his sentence reduced.

Marcus Sitz wrote on April 20, 2007 1:49 AM:Bruce,
If you are correcting me, the U.S. Attorney District in Sacramento is the "Eastern" District. As a Sierra County native who remembers driving through your little burgh on Highway 40, I would say you are "Down Below." Almost a Flatlander.
I would say that except that I live in exile, in Davis, where there is even a Flatlander newspaper (and the state champion high school ski team calls themselves the Flatlanders).
Nah, "Northeast" California starts in Sierra Valley and goes north. Think Susanville and Alturas. And Vinton and Chilcoot. And Hallelujah Junction.
That said, I'm sure we can agree: it is a region, including Alta I'm sure, where physical beauty has recently had an inverse relationship to the quality and honesty of the Congressional representation.
The problem, of course, is to persuade all those voters in the sterile tracts of Lincoln, Rocklin, Roseville, and El Dorado Hills that it is time for
some decent representation in the 4th. There just aren't enough votes in Sierra County to do the job.
Let's help Charlie Brown to change that story.
Security code goat. May the Billy Goat Gruff knock the troll Doolittle off the Foresthill Bridge and down into the empty canyon of the North Fork of the American.
