disappointing for those of us eager to get on with it, but appropriate given the circumstances...

Not only appropriate, but even from a crass political/media angle, a smart move. It will be wall-to-wall VA-Tech and "guns" in the media. Better to give it 3 days to play out some before the Thursday AG self-immolation occurs.

Well, that's.... convenient. But I guess it won't hurt for Alberto to get a couple more day's practice telling the truth. Truth telling is hard work and requires a lot of practice.

Code word: "Rice" , Hmmm....

Good call Leahy.

Good news for me...I have a seat for Obama's speech tomorrow, thanks to my daughter's membership in the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, the sponsor of this talk.

I would have been counting on C-Span to re-air.

I feel so removed from it here in germany but have been following TPM and muckraker religiously the past couple of months. Shocking, the largest shooting in American history. I think the concept of suicide bomber has some traction here as well, even if not in the usual sense, going out in a blaze of glory kind of way.

I am sorry for all those families. The rest can wait a couple of days.

I think it's reasonable to delay, but if the delay is media-related, I suspect it is pointless--the wall-to-wall feeding frenzy over the VTU killings will extend for at least a week.

Not if some blonde white woman gets bit by a shark near Anna Nicole's baby!

30 deaths in a day seems like a lot, doesn't it? Unless you live in Iraq, where only 30 is a pretty good day.

The shooting is terribly sad and senseless. My condolences to the families of those affected. Muck can wait for a few days.

Not yet, but somehow, someway, this will be good for republicans.

Don't want to hijack a thread for AG investigation purposes if it's about the horrific shootings in VA.

But not sure where to put this from ABCnews...

"Exclusive: Gonzales Contradicting His Own Testimony [subhead] Recently Released E-Mails Show Attorney General's Involvement in Attorney Firing Talks"

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/print?id=3046651

In the article, it mentions that "Regarding Lam's dimissal, the emails shows that Sampson asked Justice Department officials William Mercer and Michael Elston for help in presenting a formal plan for Gonzales to approve."

This whole thing sounds like a way to substantiate a red herring reason to fire Lam. I mean, do Mercer & Elston have any knowledge of immigration law? Why exactly are they the ones coming up with a "shape up or ship out" plan, when they don't have any knowledge of the area she's allegedly supposed to "shape up" in?

It seems like those are the kind of guys you'd put on the job if you were putting together a potemkin disciplinary action to cover up...oh, I dunno, too-strenuous investigations of the criminal tendrils of Wade Mitchell's bribery?

Well, where was Homeland Security? It's about terrorists of any type and there was ample warning from VT campus bomb threats last week that something was up. This was a typical hideous terrorist event, but this time in the US. So what about Chertoff, Brownie's former boss?

James wrote on April 16, 2007 7:45 PM:

Delay of the hearings is smart for two reasons; it avoids (or at least defers) competition with the VT tragedy for media eyeballs and it (further) defeats the WH demands of last week to get this AG hearing over with.

Both Specter and Gonzales agreed to the delay.

whizkid wrote on April 16, 2007 10:09 PM:

Yes, in light of the horrific events today in Virginia, the delay is worthwhile.
And life in Iraq seems a bit more relatable today for our people. Tragic here as it is there.

Senator Specter needs all the delays he can get. He is hoping that his insertion of the nefarious Patriot Act provision for the appointment of USAs without Congressional approval will be forgotten. That provision was the key component of the grand conspiracy to create a permanent Republican majority, by making the DoJ the political of the tool of the Party. The fact that no one is asking him questions about it smacks of a Senate cover-up. The question is, why are the Democratic Senators protecting him?

anonymous,

Regarding your link,

what is signifcant is that an MSM is breaking what is clearly a very disturbing story.
