Waxman to Rice: The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get
Here's the latest instance of what is becoming a flourishing genre in the new Congress: the spurned chairman letter. It comes when oversight efforts are met with deafening silence from the administration.
House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) wrote Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice such a letter (pdf) today. Last month, Waxman wrote Rice, inviting her to an April 18 hearing on the Niger forgeries and the infamous sixteen words, and asking a list of questions about what she knew about the documents and how they got into the State of the Union address. What he got in return was a mostly irrelevant letter from one of Rice's subordinates forwarding previous correspondence that answered none of his questions. He's not happy and is pressing again for answers.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Pat Leahy (D-VT) delivered one of the classics of the genre last week, berating Alberto Gonzales for his silence in response to repeated requests for information over the past several months.
The administration's strategy, if indeed it is one, seems short-sighted. It's worked for the past six years. But the Dems are in charge now -- and anger and subpoena-power is a dangerous mix.

The only way for that to happen is to remind the Kit Bonds (R MO) of the Senate that they were not elected by the RNC but by the voters of their states. It's time to tell these Bozo's that they serve at our pleasure and they better damn well start acting like it.
Security Code: muscle Now put some muscle in that pen and dialing finger and straighten these chumps out.

I just listened to Bush speak regarding Immigration reform bill! I sat listening with great pain, but what was he really talking about? I only hear talking points...head liners, thanking everyone (who cares) and sounding like "brownie, your doing a heck of a job" talking point again format!
He blamed congress...he blamed the people, he blamed policies, he blamed those Americans who don't want to do the work that these people are doing!!! What!!! what people, what corporations...what the hell is he flapping about!
I just scream at the tv every time he opens that uneducated mouth! Yes, honey any one can be President of the United States. Bush is a testament to that!

Sounds like an attempt to rally their hard-core base and to throw out another topic to get everyone embroiled in. Another standard diversionary tactic.
Martin Bento wrote on April 9, 2007 2:12 PM:I think there is a strategy: to force subpeona's. Fighting these in court will buy time, and the issue will wind up with the Supes. There the administration may well win, based not on the merits but the politics. In fact, they may have time to seat one more justice before the case gets there, in which case they will go for the likes of Miers - a completely reliable crony, regardless of whether acceptable to "the base". This is now survival mode. Probably, the admin has Roberts, Alito, Scalia, and Thomas; they only need one more.
The interesting scenario is if this or a similar case winds up in the court during a vacancy. There is at that point the possibility of a hung court. Anyone know what happens then?
yugan wrote on April 9, 2007 2:12 PM:what the hell does the title of this post mean? closer he gets? and is there a precedent of what will happen if the rice's and gonzalez's ignore these letters? is there an example of some secretary of state getting subpoena'ed.

I can't believe that he's going to dredge up the immigration issue again!
Here are my Talking points on Immigration:
1) Dirt cheap Labor pool.
2) Depress US citizen wages.
3) Drain on social/medical services.
4) Employers avoid payroll/SSI taxes.
5) Who Bush will have clear brush on his ranch when he leaves office.
6) Increase in identity thefts.
And I think the 12 million # that are here is under-reported by at least half = There are probably 24 million illegals 'actually' here.

That will be a whole different ballgame and might create a different dynamic with the SC for the endgame.

Not sure about the "too little" part, but he might be right about the "too late" part. I do not underestimate the ability of these folks to gum up the works. We're talking a mere 21 months at this point with the very real possibility of a slew of Presidential pardons in maybe 18 months.
I think all the Bushies really have to worry about is the whole thing coming to a head in the summer of 2008. Of course, then it might be easier to roll out the whole "partisan investigation" language.

Michael Stevens wrote on April 9, 2007 6:27 PM:If Rice is subpoenaed, she will almost certainly show. But I very much doubt that it will ever get to that. She certainly knows that appearing under the onus of a subpoena would give the appearance of her having something to hide.
My guess is that Condi and the Congress are just doing a little dance, each side gauging the seriousness of the other. As soon as Congress starts talking seriously about subpoenas, Rice's people will negotiate a time for her to appear.

If there is no way around subpoenas, then Waxman might as well get the party started early. It's time to find out what BushCo's next stonewall strategy will be.

Toast. The 2000 decision by the Repub majority on the US Supreme Court, should have told you what to expect. Jack Benny and Charlie McCarthy were allowed to take over, and the Zionists, Neo-cons, draft dodgers, rightwing nuts, zillionaires, Kissinger-type holdovers from the Tricky Dick era came in the open door. Where were you then?
Anybody know that in his last year at Halliburton, WMD Cheney got $30 mil in compensation? And still receiving deferred payments and stock options in his severance package. And he will be back there in 2009, resuminig to rake in the $$$ from all the oil services contracts that cost much more these days, since the barrel price is close to $70. Look at Halliburton's stock, and extrapolate out another 2 years. Jesus. Even I have bought some.
jan wrote on April 10, 2007 8:01 AM:21 GOP Senators are up for re-election in 2008 (only 12 Democrats). It doesn't matter if they try to "gum up the works" now. The Republicans, since the 2006 election, have proven themselves to be the still-loyal Bushies... continuing to simply rubber-stamp the ever-unpopular Prez Bush, against the will of the voters. So be it. Do any Republicans actually believe that "gumming up the works" to protect Condi Rice from explaining the journey of the 16 words into the State of the Union Address will be helpful to Republicans in 2008?

They will be in the headlines everyday, over and over, during the election season. Maybe even get a trial or two during the conventions.
Republicans up for re-election will have move away from the admin in order to be taken seriously.
Keep dragging them out!!
