Sampson Testifies about Conversation with Gonzales about Iglesias

Sen. Pat Leahy asks Kyle Sampson how David Iglesias ended up on the list of prosecutors to be purged, and Sampson replies,

"I don't remember hearing any complaints or anything about Mr. Iglesias' handling of corruption cases in New Mexico -- I do remember learning from, I believe, the attorney general, that he had received a complaint from Karl Rove about U.S. attorneys in 3 jurisdictions, including New Mexico. The substance of the complaint was that they were not pursuing voter fraud complaints aggressively enough."

Finally, the plot thickens. Unfortunately, I don't have CSPAN and the sound is broke on my cpu. Did anyone ask who the other two USAs are/were?

So, a second-or third-hand complaint, thet even cursory investigation would have disproven, gets the AG's CoS to put a guy on the 'fire' list - a guy who's supposed to work "at the pleasure of the President".

At the very least, it's quite clear that all the fired USAs have clear grounds for a civil suit against the DOJ (and possibly some of these jokers individually) for wrongful termination...

legion nails it. If they serve at the behest of the Prez, how is Karl Rove calling the shots? And if not Karl, then it's Gonzo?

Shorter--they're doing their best to shield the Prez from any involvement. But, by nature of the system, doesn't the Prez HAVE to be involved? Can underlings really just fire these USAs on a whim, without Bush's knowledge? If so, is this illegal?

Try listening at C-Span.org. Look for the link to the radio and listen on your PC.

Senator Specter inquired while questioning today whether anyone was listening. Believe me, my entire family is very carefully following the issue of the replacement of US Attorneys. We are grateful that Mr. Sampson has agreed to testify.

At best, it appears that a major staff move was made with little or no documentation; no communication of deficiencies to the AG's in question; no concern for the appearance of the firings when most were in targeted districts with politically sensitive cases potentially disrupted; and potentially using the provision inserted into the Patriot Act.

At worst, Mr. Sampson may have been "used" by the White House or other parts of the Republican Party to remove effective AG's. Once again, it shows the importance of appointing highly qualified EXPERIENCED people for high level positions. If this was all a mistake (which I doubt), it was caused my another bunch of Brownie quality employees that were in way over their head. No one with experience would have allowed this to go forward without meticulous documentation. Gonzales should be fired for taking the recommendations of his staff with such sloppy documentation on such a major issue.

They can't pawn this off on incompetent underlings over-stepping their roles. It's their job to manage their staff.

Is there any possibility the "replacements" can be fired and replaced with personnel approved via senate confirmation?

This may sound like a crazy question, but does anyone have access to transcripts or audio from Sean Hannity radio shows? Back on election day I tuned into his show and he Rove on the air. I'm not remembering all the details, but Rove brought up, kind of out of nowhere, that he was hearing reports about instances of voter fraud or irregularities in New Mexico. Seemed weird at the time. Kinda makes more sense now. And I'd really like to hear what he said again.

I mean..duh...but isn't this response in direct contradition to Sampson saying several times today that none of the firings had anything to do with anyone not going after Democrats?

He said that more than a few times, if I remember correctly..

doesn't that sound similar to the talking point in a justice dept email? that two or three of them came from border states and they could talk about immigration problems?

Pinson,
An obvious weakness in this "voter fraud allegations": this is a fraud in itself. Not a single allegation of voter fraud has been properly laid in the southern border states that I know of. This discussion is 100% hot GOP air.

Ultimately, there were no allegations of "voter fraud" in GOP states.

This diversion is a perversion. While we tear our hair and want to scream at this prez pleasure thing, over 100 more Iraqis were blown to kingdom come today at his pleasure.
No more. No more. Put him and his toadies down. Put him and his toadies away without further ado.

man, his answers are so slick sounding he can afford to smug. There must be more to wring out of him...does the AG have to resign now for this huge lie, that he wasn't involved but it was really his decision?

parrot wrote on March 29, 2007 5:49 PM:

We'll have to wait a few days to see if Sampson produces the names of the USAs put on the list to be fired in October but then redacted from the list so we can't know who they are. It would seem that someone, somewhere, had some political backing for whatever reason and were not removed from office...or are resigning quietly over the next few months.

How much more damage can these crazy, corrupt, lieing people do to our country in the next two years? These people are not patriots by any stretch of the imagination. Did not one of them have any morals training by their parents when they grew up? Did no one teach them not to lie?

boy JP, with all due respect, do you really believe this is the first administration to repeatedly lie, dissemble, obfuscate? That seems part and parcel to the profession. And as to morality -- once again, the morality that governs our realities does not apply to the political governance of this nation. We have become a nation of commercial laws. All these bums are real politique, machiavellian naked capitalists. They read you using a word like "morals" and they laugh. Morals is a word for the campaign trail -- that's when they all have morals and they let everyone know about it to. Photos with their families, visiting homes. After election the truth and morals become analogous to "what is the meaning of 'is'" ...

One question I would like asked is weather the President signed off on the list. If he didn't then it's clear that when they say the DAs serve at the pleasure of the President they really mean they serve at the pleasure of Karl Rove.

I remember when Bush first took office hearing Ari Fleischer repeat the old line that "A class people hire A class people and B class people hire C and D class people". The inference at the time was that the A class Bush people were taking over but looking at the list of toadies from Michael Brown, Alberto Gonzales, Lorita Doan, Sampson, etc. It is clear the statement is true but not how it came across.

Iglasias on CNN has just revealed that the USA HAS JUST FILED CHARGES AGAINST A PROMINENT DEMOCRAT - Probably the reason that Iglasias was fired. IF HE HAD LAID THE CHARGES THEN HE WOULD STILL BE USA !
