Rove Deputy Worked to Get Former Aide Spot

Emails in August of 2006 show that Karl Rove's deputy was intimately involved in getting Tim Griffin, who himself used to be an aide to Rove, installed as the federal prosecutor in eastern Arkansas.

An email from Scott Jennings, Rove's deputy as the Deputy Political Director at the White House, shows that Jennings was in close contact with Grfffin, even working out the logistics of getting Griffin appointed. The email also shows that then-U.S. Attorney Bud Cummins cooperated in ushering Griffin in.

"Tim said he got a call from Bud offering this idea," Jennings wrote to Alberto Gonzales' chief of staff Kyle Sampson in late August, "that Tim come on board as a special [assistant U.S. attorney] while Bud finalizes his private sector plans. That would alleviate pressure/implication that Tim forced Bud out. Any thoughts on that?"

"I think it's a great idea," Sampson responded.

The Justice Department made Griffin a special assistant USA in Arkansas the next month. Finally, in December, Griffin was made the U.S. attorney.

The Justice Department told Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) last month that Rove had "no role" in Griffin's appointment.

I think Specter just trotted out the big talking point. From the NYT:

The top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, seemed to want to give the White House the benefit of the doubt, for now, but said the administration should offer explanations. “The situation has become so convoluted that I think the administration would be best served for people to come forward and discuss the matter, even if they acted entirely properly,” Mr. Specter said in an interview on Monday.

Um...weren't you talking tough about Gonzalez going the other day, Arlen? Isn't this your m.o.?
Talk tough and prop up the regime. Isn't it time someone ask him his role in all of this?

Ok, now please explain to me why Scott Jennings, a government-salaried White House staffer, is using the gwb43.com domain to send out his email.

The gwb43.com domain is owned by the Republican National Committee.

By sending e-mail through this domain instead of the White House's own system (who.eop.gov) is the White House Office of Political Affairs putting Presidential Records and communications out of the government's hands -- and into the RNC's?

Oh yes, making sure Fitzgerald got the ax along with the rest of the gamy gang would've proven to the world that there was absolutely NOTHING political going on. Just a little housekeeping after the elections.

No Libby indictmnet. No cloud over Cheney and the White House. Just another example of how hard it is for the public to get to the root of classified leaks by government officials, like Dubya feared and told reporters at a press conference right after Valerie Plame was outed.

True, but the DOJ document dump shows they were looking at putting Griffin in the E.D.Ark. as early as March of 2005.

I think the note on using the gwb43.com domain email for this is worth following out, too.

Citizen 92 raises an incredibly important point! So important as to prompt me to post something (which I never do).

Why the hell are we talking about how fat Karl's grunts are, instead of how many presidential records might be slipping through the cracks? Don't think that just because they included this in "the dump" that they intend to treat the gwb43.com domain as part of the presidential record in the future. Remember folks, these people try to invalidate court cases by saying "we're not doing it anymore so it's no longer an issue for the courts..." (read: NSA wiretapping, Gitmo detainees, ...)

Paul Kiel, at a minimum you need to pull a Carney and call a couple Democrats on the Hill for their thoughts...start with Schumer.

It's not just Jennings. Notice that he copied kr@georgewbush.com on one of the emails. Anybody want to guess how those 250 emails in the Plame case got lost? Maybe because everybody in Rove's operation at the WH doesn't use .gov email addresses?

God damn it! Issue the fucking subpoenas for the IT guy at the White House right now! And get someone one the job of cross-referencing every email we have from these bastards so we can put together a list of the other domains to subpoena!

Skeptic wrote on March 13, 2007 6:31 PM:

During the Clinton administration, they shut down all access to hotmail, aol and other external web mail access from eop.gov computers. You could only use the eop's Lotus Notes.

Why? Because the Office of Records Management feared that they weren't able to accurately capture Presidential Records?

Why that? Because Ken Starr and the various special prosecutors kept beating up on the career IT people who ran the White House networks back then accusing them of erasing information, wiping tapes, etc, etc.

So why the double standard, Karl?

[of course, this is way before personal wireless email too, so using the EOP's computers was your only option]

"Presidential Records" and "Government Records" are created by government workers. And those records must be properly captured and archived. If Scott Jennings was earning a White House salary and sending emails from inside the White House, even from the gwb43.com domain, he was creating a "Presidential Record." His failure to appropriately archive that information would amount to an ethics violation, and possibly more. There is extensive administrative law to back this up - a lot of it thanks to Nixon's antics.

Clearly the Bush administration is operating fast and very loose with Presidential records.

Citizen92 wrote on March 13, 2007 6:34 PM:

And don't foget how the Administration dug in its heels over releasing the Secret Service visitor records for Abramoff, Jeff Gannon, and the VP's Energy Task force, etc.

They stonewalled, obfuscated and then eventually signed a half-a*sed "agreement" with the Secret Service that the records were "Presidential" and protected.

Why? Because the Secret Service uses government computers. They couldn't obscure the records in the gwb43.com domain.

UPDATE from a previous post (see below)

Graves the for USA in Western MO and his wife's and brother-in-law no bids...given by Gov Blunt (R) - due to the conflict of interest Graves resigns and the "case" involving the Gov's no bids is sent tooooooooo....the Eastern District of Arkansas, yes Bud Cummins land, now Tim Griffin land - was Cummins getting too close to the Blunt's? Is that why Cummins had to go - you can bet that Tim Griffin isn't "looking" into the Republican Gov of Mo's involvement and shenighans.

Senator's McCaskill, Pryor and Lincoln need to have a pow woo - the more I dig, the more enlighting it becomes.
----------------------------------------

How about a look see into the Western District of MO.
Graves steps down quietly in March of '06. Speculation is that his wife's and brothers multi-million dollar no-bid contracts to run MO license bureaus was at the heart of the resignation, go deeper and you get this; Washington was getting a lot of pressue for the USA to investigate Gov Blunt (R) for the fore mentioned no-bid contracts. Can ya see a conflict...DAHHH
By quietly resigning the possiblity of a MO USA investigation of Blunt and the no-bids were stymied.
That same month (3/06)Bradley Scholzman is appoint the new USA - well Scholzman is from the Washington DOJ and his specialty you ask? All things voters - rights, machines.....possibly out of the same rat hole that Griffin occupied (will try and verify that). At the time of Scholzman appointment it was never mentioned that he'd be a "temp".
This is the state were Claire McCaskill was going to war with incumbent Jim Talent. Scholzman skirts the Senate confirmation process for 9 months - and to everyone's surprise - Tim Woods, another Washington connected DOJ attorney is appointed to take Scholzman's place.
You got to wonder what the musical chairs was about and what mischief was being done behind the scenes in MO. Were the Democrats targeted, was there interference by the USA concerning voter "stuff". Was there USA or FBI "inquiries" into candidates or friends of candidates...all under the quise of an "investigation"
Were there any Democrats indicted, pressured, "talked to"...etc by the MO USA.

This is yet another thing that needs some "looking into" and Senator McCaskill should be the point person.

Republicans are just waiting to see if they're compartmentalized enough to maintain deniability, promising their first born to the devil if they escape this mess unscathed.

I'm really concerned about what investigation Lam's replacement may be sabotaging. Particularly in the Dusty Foggo continuing investigations, which is pretty near the top of the food chain. Good question. Barring some sort of impeachment of Gonzalez, and or Bush himself, and/or deal to relinquish investigation to a special investigator... hard to say. something along those lines should be possible though as it becoems clear how crooked the WH and appointments in the DoJ are trying to derail the investigation.
