DoJ Claimed "No Role" in Rove Aide's Hiring
Now that Alberto Gonzales has admitted that the Justice Department didn't give accurate information to Congress, it's worth reviewing what they said. Here's an example.
In late February, Richard Hertling, the acting Assitant Attorney General, wrote a letter to Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in which he claimed that the "Department is not aware of Karl Rove playing any role in the decision to appoint [Karl Rove's former aide Timothy] Griffin."
Unfortunately, for the Justice Department, however, in an email outlining the media strategy for defending Griffin's appointment, Gonzales chief of staff Kyle Sampson wrote that getting Tim Griffin appointed was "important to Harriet, Karl, etc." You can read the email here.
Update: Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had a pretty complete rundown of the false statements made by Justice Department officials to Congress and the press. Transcript below...
From this morning's press conference:
Schumer: Here are some of the falsehoods we've been told that are now unraveling.First, we were told that the seven of the eight U.S. attorneys were fired for performance reasons.
It now turns out this was a falsehood, as the glowing performance evaluations attest.
Second, we were told by the attorney general that he would, quote, "never, ever make a change for political reasons."
It now turns out that this was a falsehood, as all the evidence makes clear that this purge was based purely on politics, to punish prosecutors who were perceived to be too light on Democrats or too tough on Republicans.
Third, we were told by the attorney general that this was just an overblown personnel matter.
It now turns out that far from being a low-level personnel matter, this was a longstanding plan to exact political vendettas or to make political pay-offs.
Fourth, we were told that the White House was not really involved in the plan to fire U.S. attorneys. This, too, turns out to be false.
Harriet Miers was one of the masterminds of this plan, as demonstrated by numerous e-mails made public today. She communicated extensively with Kyle Sampson about the firings of the U.S. attorneys. In fact, she originally wanted to fire and replace the top prosecutors in all 93 districts across the country.
Fifth, we were told that Karl Rove had no involvement in getting his protege appointed U.S. attorney in Arkansas.
In fact, here is a letter from the Department of Justice. Quote: "The department is not aware of Karl Rove playing any role in the decision to appoint Mr. Griffin."
It now turns out that this was a falsehood, as demonstrated by Mr. Sampson's own e-mail. Quote: "Getting him, Griffin, appointed was important to Harriet, Karl, et cetera.
Sixth, we were told to change the Patriot Act was an innocent attempt to fix a legal loophole, not a cynical strategy to bypass the Senate's role in serving as a check and balance.
It was Senator Feinstein who discovered that issue. She'll talk more about it.
So there has been misleading statement after misleading statement -- deliberate misleading statements. And we haven't gotten to the bottom of this yet, but believe me, we will pursue it.

They're circling the wagons - sticking to the story that axing the USAs was "the right thing to do." It's a mystery to me how they expect to keep that wall in place when the Kyle Sampson memo outlines their whole "purge & avoid the Senate with our own replacements" strategy in detail. Seems more likely that they don't have a workable way out of this yet, and they're just playing for time at this point. Gonzalez is complete toast at this point, sad that he doesn't realize it yet. Also, the deafening silence on this matter from wingnuttia speaks volumes. This one scares the heck out them.

anonymous wrote on March 13, 2007 4:29 PM:Yes, and if you read into the documents posted at the Judiciary committee website http://judiciary.house.gov/media/pdfs/DOJdocsPt1070313.pdf , you'll find that Tim Griffin pencilled in like more than a year before, as Crimmins replacement.
Crimmins (and Lam) were already targeted as early as March 2, 2005 - look at the 2/24/05 chart appended to a 3/2/05 memo at the very beginning of part 1 of the Judiciary committee post.
Then, at page 13 of part one of the Judiciary committee .pdf, you'll find a memo listing Crimmins as one of those to be replaced, with an obvious redact of the replacement candidate's name.
Then at page 17 of the same post, the same document, but this time with the name "Tim Griffin" in the replacement candidate space - not redacted.
then, at page 21 of the same post, a 1/06 memo with much the same text, and "Tim Griffin?" in the replacement candidate slot.
Then, at page 22 of the same post, a 5/11/06 memo requesting discussion re Tim Griffin for E.D. Ark.
From the very next line of that same email, a very trenchant question for the witness (particularly as it relates to Harriet Miers) is: "What exactly was 'the real problem we have now with Carol Lam that leads me to conlcude that we should have a replacement available to replace her on 11/18, the day her four-year term expires.'"
Might that "real problem with Carol Lam" be her willingness to prosecute Republican Congresscritters?

That same month (3/06)Bradley Scholzman is appoint the new USA - well Scholzman is from the Washington DOJ and his specialty you ask? All things voters - rights, machines.....possibly out of the same rat hole that Griffin occupied (will try and verify that). At the time of Scholzman appointment it was never mentioned that he'd be a "temp".
This is the state were Claire McCaskill was going to war with incumbent Jim Talent. Scholzman skirts the Senate confirmation process for 9 months - and to everyone's surprise - Tim Woods, another Washington connected DOJ attorney is appointed to take Scholzman's place.
You got to wonder what the musical chairs was about and what mischief was being done behind the scenes in MO. Were the Democrats targeted, was there interference by the USA concerning voter "stuff". Was there USA or FBI "inquiries" into candidates or friends of candidates...all under the quise of an "investigation"
Were there any Democrats indicted, pressured, "talked to"...etc by the MO USA.
This is yet another thing that needs some "looking into" and Senator McCaskill should be the point person.

Alberto....do you really truly expect me to believe that the Justice Department goes to all of the trouble (and extra careful trouble at that) to slip through carefully crafted language giving YOU the right to appoint USA's without having to bother with the Senate and that YOU didn't know about that....either when it happened or when discussions began about using the new power given to you?
That language didn't just happen....it was carefully developed and it was clear that your office did NOT want a lot of attention called to it at the time. Otherwise, why go to such special care to get it into the Patriot Act without notice that even Arlen Specter claims HE didn't know what you were doing (a claim I highly doubt).
And do you also expect me to believe that with Rove and Meirs and the GOP Chair of New Mexico and Domenici and Heather Wilson ALL yammering away and wanting action NOW on dumping USAs they didn't like that you, as the nation's Attorney General just didn't know anything about it? I think it was MSNBC (I was flipping back and forth with CNN, so I can't be sure) but the reporter and anchor were just atrocious. It sounded like they were talking about some kind of game rather than the law being broken.
It was all about the Dems vs. the administration as far as I can tell they made no effort to ask a single Republican Senator for his thoughts on the matter. They certainly didn't quote any and didn't mention any attempts they made to contact them.

Maybe it's not too late. The elections last November were just the first step in reclaiming our democracy from the "culture of corruption" Republican thugs hell-bent on subverting our rules, our laws and our Constitution in pursuit of their monopolistic agenda for America.
Too bad PNAC disbanded. All their records should be subpoenaed and everyone associated with it should be called before Congress to explain their "culture of corruption" Republican actions. It's good to see the administration finally getting called on deliberate lies and borderline fascist tendencies of the imperial presidency.
The rubber stamp Republican congress let them get away with it for six years while the Constitution was serially abused and our way of Government cheapened. During those six years the excuses switched went through several phases.
First it was all the imaginiation of Democrats, leftists, and any other label people like Rush Limbaugh, coulter, Orielly, Hannity, etc could employ to slander those questioning this President and current Republicans. It was all Democratic 'partisan politics' and Democrats 'emboldening the terrorists.' That was phase one.
Phase two was this administration is basically good, they've just had hard times with 911 and all. Sure some mistakes were made, nobody is perfect, but they're good folks. Anyone who says otherwise, back to phase one.
Phase three was they're incompetent in some matters (like Iraq, New Orleans, etc) and the incompetance is always linked to one specific person who takes the fall. Like Brownie, or Rumsfeld, Paul Bremer, or whoever. That person resigns, probably gets a medal, and the Administration promises to get back on the right course, and Republican pundits go right back to carrying their water.
Phase Four, was shock and outrage. Republican Congress and pundits were shocked, just shocked I tell you, at the betrayal of real Republican values. Shocked at the out of control spending that's gone on for six years. Shocked at the mismanagement of Iraq and the ruining of our military readiness. Shocked at the mendacity and betrayal. Shocked! Of course they're all clear how surprised they are because in no way did any Republican have anything to do with all these messes.
Now were' in the final phase of meltdown, the "try and get ahead of the scandal" phase. Republicans popping out of the woodwork to call for resignations and express thier outrage, all the while downplaying their personal involvement and trying to misdirect the scandal and pass the buck. The fact they've rubber stamped this admin for six years, not important. the fact they could have investigated this malfesence any time but chose to turn a blind eye and accuse Democrats of dishonesty when they leveled charges now proving to be true, not important. They're outraged now, outraged I tell you! Did I mention they're "main street" Republicans and want to see a return to core values, and are just realizing it after six years of enabling these crooks?
All the while they continued to rubber stamp and take the money from people like DeLay and Abramoff, and continue to meet with people like Norquist and his K-Street Project to this day.
What a bunch of folksy, pandering, lying, cowardly, buck passing, phonys these Republicans are!

By final phase I mean the crooks already lost Congress last November and there is so much evidence of their malfeasance, they're busted, a sinking ship. It's just a matter of how fast the Dems investigate and how fast the Republican rats flee.
Let's face reality, the Bush administration and the Rubber Stamp Republican congress have already been a complete disaster, and now it's just a matter of revealing all the damage they've done and kept partially hidden. Iraq, and a whole bunch of other issues like corruption, deregulation of the environmental protections, suppression of science, pandering to anti-evolution fundies and corruption of the schools, the worst political cronyism in all agencies including the DoJ, Pentagon, DHS, CIA, etc; corruption in military contracting, privatization of the military for Soldiers of Fortune, Halliburton, Patriot Act abuses, suspension of habeus corpus, Gitmo, Extraordinary rendition, money laundering political contributions and general campaign finance abuses, faulty paperless voting machines, voter suppression efforts run out of the RNC, the corruption of Cunnignham, DeLay, Abramoff, Norquist, Ralph Reed (refers to his own evangelical base as "whackos" while taking bribes from Abramoff), K-Street project letting lobbyists run government and write legislation, continual malfeasance from Rove, Cheney, and the list just goes on and on. Everything about this Bush admin and the Republican congress of the last six years is crooked.
It's not accidental corruption in an otherwise honest group. It's hard to find an honest "main street" Republican in office these days, though they'll all claim to be. But they've almost all been directly involved with the corruption of government or turned a blind eye and accepted the campaign contributions from Delay and other sleaze while the country went to hell and the Republican congress kept rubber stamping for Bush.
This is what happens when people go into government who are ideologically opposed to government and have their heart in the private sector and massive lobbiest contributions in thier pockets. Never forget Bush's #1 campaign contributor of 2000 was Ken Lay of Enron. Bush found Jesus at the bidding of Karl Rove right before he ever ran for a political office, and Karl Rove had been arguing Evangelicals were the untapped voters for many years. Those are no accidents. This admin and much of the GOP were well corrupted before 2000. The Bush admin was a culmination of decades of strategy.
All the skeletons are coming out now. It's long overdue.
Some, like Hagel, will try and get ahead of the disaster and distance himself from it. Others are in too deep and beholden to the kooky 30% that still supports the crooks, but that number is shrinking all the time, and once those devout suckers lose faith, they're especially PO'ed.
By final phase I mean it's only getting worse for Republicans as more of the truth comes out about what they've been up to. They can go out fighting or plea for clemency. No, that doesn't fit the timeline. The "clean sweep" idea was supposedly floated shortly after Bush won re-election, reportedly because she was unhappy then with their lack of zeal in going after "voter fraud" (read: "Democrats voting without harassment"). This would have been late 2004 or early 2005. Her short-lived nomination to the Supreme Court was in October of 2005.
