House Members to Hit Wilson with Ethics Complaint?
Earlier this week, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington wrote a letter to the House ethics committee, requesting that they investigate whether Rep. Heather Wilson (R-NM) broke ethics rules by calling U.S. Attorney David Iglesias and questioning him about his office's investigation of a prominent state Democrat.
But there's a funny thing about the ethics committee in the House. Unlike in the Senate, a complaint does not automatically trigger a preliminary investigation. For that to happen, a member of the House has to file a referral. And, because of an ongoing ethics truce between the parties, that is exceedingly rare.
Take, for instance, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer's (D-MD) remarks to Roll Call about Wilson (sub. req.). “I believe the House [ethics committee] ought to take it under consideration,” he said, but...
“Am I going to file a complaint? The answer is no. It has been my consistent position that the ethics committee has a responsibility ... when issues are raised in the public sphere ... I would hope they would do that.”
In other words, he's not going to do anything about it but "hope."
But now The Los Angeles Times reports, "Congressional sources say that fellow lawmakers may file a complaint with the House Ethics Committee."
Who will that brave soul be?
CREW's Naomi Seligman Steiner isn't holding her breath. "I’ll believe it when I see it," she told me.

Anyway, the point I made to Josh at the time was was, denying Hoyer the spot would be a public castration of the DLC. Hoyer got the spot, and (in my humble opinion) that means business as usual.
Ergo, no surprises in Hoyer's failure to act.

TPM and all blogs, please, focus on the backstory of Specter and the PATRIOT act now, and call his impartiality directly into question, so he stops stonewalling!
He's the embodiment of 'conflict of interest.' He's essentially investigating himself as his PATRIOT provision was the corner stone of this whole scandal, intentional or not.
He's clearly attempting to downplay/stonewall the scandal, as he did Iglacias, to cover his own ass.
This needs immediate media attention before the media forgets or investigators lose their nerve and let Specter and everyone else off the hook.
Focus on the backstory of Specter and the PATRIOT act now, and call his impartiality directly into question, so he stops stonewalling!

The issue of why Heather and Pete both avoided calling him at the office will likely come up again should either face ethics charges. Heather may have been desperate, evil, lying, and married to a sex offender but she's not stupid.
As a politically active New Mexico resident, I do not think it likely that our Congressman Udall will file a complaint against Heather. The small New Mexico congressional delegation seems to have an unwritten agreement regarding saying or doing bad things about fellow New Mexico elected representatives.
Judging from his recent "one step backward" approach to Ag Gate, Rep. Steve Pearce, the ultra conservative Repugnican from southern New Mexico might file charges to remove Heather as a competitor for Domenci's seat. His constituents are the least politically aware folks in the state, so he would pay no price at the polls for this.
Even Bill Richardson has been pals with Domenici on numerous occasions. I haven't heard word one from him about this national news story. His silence on this New Mexico tale might come back to haunt him on the campaign trail.

I certainly don't think it is overwrought to say that the Republican Party, under Bush-Cheney, has become a criminal racket.
And it's also clear, though for some observers only in retrospect, that this criminal racket has mounted a life threatening assault on American democracy, and specifically on each of the critical components of a properly functioning democracy.
What's even more disheartening is that no-one has the guts to bring it to an end.
The repubs may be causing the injury, but gutless dems standing around like ineffective and incompetent paramedics will be the ones who let the patient die.
And make no mistake about it: it will be the end of America as we knew her if there is no impeachment.
