CIA Officer Counseled on "How to Play This"

Boy, I bet the prosecutors' eyes just lit up when they saw this email.

It's from Dusty Foggo to a person called Wilkes Subordinate X in the indictment (he matches the description of Brent Wilkes' nephew Joel Combs). At the time, Foggo was helping Wilkes, through his nephew, land a subcontract for procurement services for the CIA. He sent the email just after Wilkes had hosted Foggo at a Hawaiian resort -- and can barely contain his giddiness at their scheme to land a contract for Wilkes' front company, the name of which Foggo apparently didn't even know.

From the indictment:

On or about January 7, 2004, immediately after his Hawaiian vacation with Wilkes, Foggo sent Wilkes Subordinate X an email with a subject line of "Re: Aloha," stating: "Had a great time - no diving, but still fun. I would like the 'President' or 'CEO' of '[entity]' to come visit. Brent told me that was you (smile), so lets [sic] get to it. I'll need to brief you a bit on how we need to play this, but that needs to be face to face, before you meet my people."

Twenty days later, the indictment notes, Foggo met with Wilkes, Wilkes' nephew, and the CIA contractor through which Wilkes was getting the subcontract at CIA headquarters.

I think it's interesting how Brent Wilkes was able to get all of this access and he didn't even have the proper security clearances. Most of what he and Foggo did wasn't classified, but the indictment states that Foggo shared classified information with Wilkes with regards to the contract. Wasn't there some sort of flap awhile back between the U.S. attorney's office in San Diego and (I think) the CIA? I vaguely remember something about the investigators being denied access to certain bits of information because they didn't have the proper security clearances.

I'm not clear on how the contract was set up. If Wilkes's front company was a subcontractor of another CIA vendor, did the front company provide any legitimate services? Or did Foggo set up the contract simply to launder cash to Wilkes?

Not only is Foggo crooked, he is incredibly stupid for generating a trail of evidence through emails.

Who would have thought a fucking idiot could become the #3 guy at the CIA in the middle of the GWOT?

The last CIA director comes to mind: Mr. "I'm not qualified to be the Director."

I think '[entity]' doesn't mean that Foggo didn't know the name of the company, but that prosecutors redacted it. Wilkes no doubt kept him well informed of these details.

Brent. Brent. Brent. Sigh.

I know it is bit late for little bit of advice . . . If you spread the graft about there is less chance that enemies of patronage will go after you. Yes, bribes to one guy that can specifically help you are more efficent BUT the payola snide knows no boundaries. If you threw a few bucks towards Whore-for-hay and bought yourself a Ranger's badge, you'd be Ambassador of some tiny island state disappearing under ever increasing surf RATHER than planning a trip to Club Fed.

There oughta be rule about stupid people not being allowed into the crime game.
