IraqSlogger: Anonymous Iran Briefer Outed

From Eason Jordan at IraqSlogger:

...one of the three supposedly unnamed US officials apparently has been outed by an Iraqi news service, Voices of Iraq, whose report on the Baghdad news conference identified one of the three speakers as Major General William Caldwell, whose portfolio includes public affairs and who holds frequent news conferences and grants one-on-one interviews. So, if the VOI report identifying Caldwell is correct, why did every other news organization apparently agree to grant anonymity to the general who's the official spokesman of the US-led Multi-National Force in Iraq? Why would Caldwell insist on not having his name associated with these allegations today?

I think this tells you all you need to know about General Caldwell, who penned an editorial "Why We Persevere", published in the Washington Post, December 6, 2006. The editorial begins as such:

"I don't see a civil war in Iraq."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/05/AR2006120501128.html

I guess the General tends to be selective in what he chooses to see.

Probably because he doesn't want his name linked to such thin gruel. The supposedly exotic weapons displayed in the powerpoint presentation appear to be garden variety RPG-7 munitions in use by, oh, about 60 countries world wide.

My guess is they wanted teh story to have legs for as long as possible with no refutation. If they can get the story out there for a few days, it eventually becomes a meme that is hard to knock down.

It seems to be a common pattern with this administration and one that is happily aided by the MSM.

My God, IRAN is supplying weapons to the insurgents in IRAQ??? Who else is supplying weapons to these people???

(this is a trick question)

Um, the USA? The Saudis? The Russians?
