Ex-Rice Aide: Memory Lapse on Iran "Really Quite Curious"

I just got off the phone with Flynt Leverett, a former CIA Mideast analyst and National Security Council staffer during President Bush's first term. Leverett says he finds it "really quite curious" that Secretary Rice is pleading a memory lapse on an Iranian offer shortly after the Iraq war to, among other things, recognize Israel.

Leverett himself says he "saw the actual document" detailing the offer, which arrived at the State Department's Near Eastern Affairs bureau via fax around late April or early May of 2003, when he had left the White House to return to his regular post as an analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency.

Leverett wasn't around to personally show Rice the document. But, he says, "What I was told from colleagues over at the NSC, people I knew on the NSC staff -- I dont know for a fact that it was put on (Rice's) desk, but it did go to the NSC. And I know for a fact that at State, it went all the way up to [Secretary of State Colin] Powell."

When the fax arrived at the State Department in 2003, the senior director for the Middle East at the NSC was Elliott Abrams. An NSC spokeswoman told Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post, who broke the Iran-overture story last year, that Abrams has no recollection of the fax either.

What's more, Leverett says that he tried to include information on the fax in a New York Times op-ed he wrote in December of 2006 that was heavily redacted at the White House's behest. Even though the information had been reported before -- in Kessler's original Post story, for instance -- the White House held it back, claiming it was "classified."

Are we going to hear over the weekend that the Adminstration has just ordered the Pentagon to draw up plans to attack Illinois? Do the children of Indiana have to fear that Commander Codpiece is going to nuke them to South Dakota cuz they are withholding switch-grass? Remember: everything runs through the OVP, through Cheney. That document would land on his desk first, most likely. What happens from there...

In this case, how receptive would Cheney be to this offer? And therefore, how possible is it that Rice never heard about it?

Spencer,

Make better use of your lawyer-type skills. At least in the part of Rice's testimony that I heard (on NPR), she was carefully stressing "seeing" the memo--and Leverett isn't saying/can't say that that was false. Heard of it, briefed on it--did anybody bother to cross-examine her on the point? I bet not; too much deference to the SoS.

Result: she gets away with a Rove-designed talking point--and without committing perjury.

Emphasis should be placed on the point that Rice publicly acknowledged this letter in May '06 - as reported in Kessler's WaPo story and elsewhere - and asserted that "there is nothing in it that addresses the major issues between the United States and the rest of the world and Iran," going on to call it "very philosophical."

And now she doesn't remember it? The kind of amnesia we're expected to believe is epidemic around the White House happens only in soap opera, not real life.

Didn't she have a memory lapse also over a briefing packet that Clinton had left this admin advising that that their top priorty would be the Al-Kiada terrorists and about they might attack us using airplanes. Assuming the fax exists, there are a great number of reasons why the State Department and the Bush Administration might not consider the content it worth pursuing? Iranians do not respect freedom of speech or freedom of religion. The leaders of Iran refer to the United States as an empire when it certainly is not. The incessant name calling from Iranian officials is ridiculous. "Great Satan" is a label that refers to what Iran is, not what the United States is. Any nation that believes in freedom of religion is, by Iran's definition, "satanic" with respect to the Islamic Republic of Iran. How many North Americans, South Americans, Europeans, Asians, or Africans will ever take the time to think about it that way? I suppose they'll remain consumed with hatred and the notion that blame and justice are essentially the same concepts.

Blame less and think more...

It no longer matters if we believe them or not, when they say that they have no independent memory of of having sex with Osama. Who cares?

Common sense tells us that something MUST be done about high public officials who are memory impaired. They admit that they are. We don't even have to have a trial over it.

Why do we care a whit about Dick Cheney's heart condition (actually, I don't), and not seem to give a whit that we have mentally impaired people running this nation.

It is freakin' amazement to me!

Rice has been incompetent from day one, and is just as guilty as Bush and Cheney in deceiving the American people and pushing so hard for this war, and has been helping her dear leader in covering up their crimes. When will we ever get honest officials, who can stand up to their leaders and refuse to go along with dangerous policies, knowing fully well the nation will suffer because of those polices?

We (Bushco)do not want to negotiate with Iran because, yes, we want to control the price of Middle East Oil along with our buddies the Saudis. Nothing will stop these maniacs from carrying out there grand plan of enriching the oil oligarchs here and across the Atlantic. This is also why Chavez must go and they will not stop until Venezuela stops defying OPEC. Also read John Perkins Confessions of an Economic Hitman. It will be very revealing after they find a way to take out Chavez. This group will say and do anything to see their grand plan fulfilled.

It can't lie with me. I have been opposed to these people since Bush's appointment by the Supreme Court. The whole country was behind the President when he invaded Afghanistan. I can think of no one outside the DOD that wanted to invade Iraq. Iraq gave us no reason. People knew they cooked the intelligence and did nothing about it. When Wilson exposed a part of it, instead of facts to substantiate THEIR claims, they smeared him and outed his wife. From listening to and reading Larry Johnson, a CIA NOC is undercover FOREVER. Not only did they expose her while she was working on the same thing they were worried about, they exposed Brewster-Jennings her cover company, and all who had dealings with her and it and lost all the time and effort and money expended. The MSM still permits Administration talking heads continue to say she wasn't undercover. SHE WAS. Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, Feith, Franklin, Rice, Abrams et al were the fathers of this illegal and immoral war that bankrupted the country of it's young people, our economy and our standing in the world. The should be held responsible and accountable.

It is about OIL - Saudi oil. The only reason Saddam lasted as long as he did was that Exxon was okay with using him as an offset against the Sauds . . . Until he was stupid enough to announce that he was going to trade in oil-euros instead of oil-dollars once sanctions got lifted. Amazingly within three months . . . Douglas C. Smyth wrote on February 9, 2007 12:39 PM:

Hillary on Iran
While I have long said that we must keep all options on the table, I also believe we should engage with our enemies in order to learn more about them, what their objectives are, where the real power centers are, and what leverage we can bring to bear on them. Because we need our friends and allies to stand with us, I also want to send a message to the rest of the world - should we ever have to take more drastic action - that we have aggressively pursued all diplomatic options. Hillary Clinton, email statement on Iran, 02/9/07

Didn't she learn? This was almost word for word the same argument she made for authorizing Boosh back in 2003. I told her to check her sources and not to do the same thing over again, not that she'll listen to me.

It's obvious, though, what Boosh and Rove need to do, since Boosh's presidency is on the skids: manufacture a pretext, a Tonkin Gulf (my uncle-in-law was one of the ones who falsified the first one), and then "leaders" like Hillary will just fall into line like ten pins falling in a bowling alley.

Here is what Hillary says about Iran:
Certainly, Iran is one of the most serious national security challenges facing our nation today. The Iranian President has made a series of outrageous comments questioning the Holocaust and calling for Israel to be wiped off the map. He has also been the leading spokesperson for Iran 's pursuit of the technology that could potentially allow it to build nuclear weapons.

United States policy in this regard must be clear and unequivocal. We cannot and must not permit Iran to build or acquire nuclear weapons. A nuclear Iran would pose a serious threat to Israel and others in the region. It would also pose a significant threat to the United States by combining access to nuclear materials and technology with support for terrorism. The Iranian regime's pro-terrorist, anti-American and anti-Israel rhetoric only underscores the seriousness of the threat we face."

It is not at all clear that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons technology (but it is keeping its options open), and it is certainly clear that Ahmadinejad is viewed by the elite (who actually control foreign policy--the president does not) as an unlettered boor. Also, Iran's support of "terrorists" has nothing to do with al Qaeda, which is Sunni, and therefore has nothing but contempt for the Iranian regime. Iran does support the "democratic" government we installed in Iraq, because it is pro-Iranian. It is highly unlikely that Iran is supporting the Sunni insurgency, more likely that it is supplying the Shiite militias, and of course Hezbollah. Are we at war with them, too?

Hillary's view of Iran is disturbing. And she's probably more "liberal" than most in the Senate.
So, what are the chances that Boosh will take his chance with Iran when it "happens," and that he will be supported by a majority in the Senate, and maybe even the House?
