Swift CEO: Raids Were Example
From the AP:
The head of meatpacker Swift & Co. said federal officials wanted a high-profile example of an immigration crackdown when they staged raids at its plants in six states, including Minnesota, in an identity theft investigation late last year.ICE arrested 1,282 workers during raids in Colorado, Nebraska, Texas, Utah, Iowa and Minnesota. Of those, 246 now face state or federal identity theft charges and the rest face immigration charges.
President and CEO Sam Rovit said the government rejected the company's offer to help in the investigation months before the Dec. 12 raids.
"They were looking for a marquee to show the administration it was tough on immigration,'' he told the Greeley Tribune for a story published Friday.
Here's a reminder of the toll of this demonstration.

Mr. Rovit and countless other business owners have exploited cheap foreign illegal labor for years so they could enhance their bottom lines. And in doing so they also rob US citizens of work and/or lower their standard of living by reducing wages and benefits because of the readily available supply of cheap illegals. Personally, I hope that these marquee busts start occuring every day of the week and congress finally develops the backbone to force the enforcement of harsh penalties that nick these entrepenuers in the pocketbook and send a few of them to the gray bar hotel.

I've spoken with other small business owners who have had to pay fines even when they tried to verify their employees' identities. Let's see if they are just as hard on the big companies.

George Schmidt wrote on February 5, 2007 2:35 PM:Did you know that the real owner of those stolen social security numbers will have to pay the income taxes on their apparent "extra income"?
That is ONE of the reasons why it is necessary to continuously monitor your credit information. You can't do it, or won't do it, that is why you need the Identity Theft Shield.
You will be put in a position of needing to prove that you did not earn the extra income earned by the identity thieves.
Smitty Irving wrote on February 5, 2007 11:21 PM:The states with income taxes should prosecute the executives for tax fraud. When business executives who knowingly hire illegals start ending up in Attica, Angola, Joliet, and San Quentin instead of Club Fed, then hiring of illegals will end.
