Admin Official: "The Best Plan Is To Have This Plan Succeed"
During a press conference this afternoon, National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley spun the National Intelligence Estimate's key findings to support the president's "surge" plan in Iraq.
As we reported earlier, the Key Judgments paint an extremely dire picture of the situation. In one key line, it says that "even if violence is diminished, given the current winner-take-all attitude and sectarian animosities infecting the political scene, Iraqi leaders will be hard pressed to achieve sustained political reconciliation in the time frame of this Estimate."
That's not as hopeless as it sounds, according to Hadley. All that means is that since Iraqi leaders will be hard pressed, "there is no alternative but to press them hard to do that reconciliation."
"One of the things you should conclude from this NIE," Hadley said, "is the best plan is to have this plan succeed."

Reasonable people can no longer even muster the motivation to engage the administration's policies (its actions or words) with serious debate. Currently, the only principled response seems to be mockery - mockery and urging reasonable politicians to get off their arses.

Oops. It wasn't my fault my comment got printed two times. It was, it had to have been, someone else's fault. I just don't know how it happened but taking responsibility for it happening would not be very presidential.

To Joann Price: Let me tell you what I decided to do. I went out and purchased a sign with changeable numerals (they're about 8" high). I have the sign mounted inside the glass door at the front of my house. The sign has four numerals and (as you probably guessed) I have posted the daily US casualty count in Iraq (right now the number is 3090). I live in a small town in northern New Hampshire on a main road and many, many people have commented on my sign. Again: it's an American flag, the word "Iraq" and the changing casualty figure. (I don't think there's a sign large enough to accomodate the number of Iraqi civilian casualties). It's my way of silently protesting the Bush Administration's evil foreign policy decision, short of blowing my brains out in frustration.

That reminds me of when Tony Snow argued that the administration DOES have a plan for Iraq. "The plan is to WIN." As opposed to that other kind of plan, the plan to lose. Such an easy choice. Anybody could be The Decider!
Or how about that cute PowerPoint document from a year and a half ago that was supposed to convince us that they had a plan. It was called Strategy for Victory. And that was basically it. Plan: to achieve victory!
If these people cannot distinguish between a plan and a goal, then how can they possibly plan anything? That's like getting into a complicated chess game and saying for your first move, "My plan is to checkmate!" Intermediate steps like developing your pieces, opening files, controlling the center, well, that's just nuance, and we don't waste time on nuance around here.

In the brief history of this country, Americans have shown time and time again that they will sacrifice their lives to protect their country. They have shown it in justified wars like WWI and WWI and the American Revolution. This Iraq war has NO justification. A pre-emptive strike against a sovereign nation that was not an imminent threat to this country has proven as disastrous as the concept itself. And who has Bush blamed for this unleashed horror: Iran, Syria, al-Malaki, the Iraq people, Clinton, the Democrats, and anyone who disagrees with him. At one point he even blamed Saddam while Saddam was in jail.
Are we Americans simply going to "stay the course" and allow this administration to hijack our country? Just like Bush, we should declare: We were never stay the course and then we should seriously consider the "I" word.
