In Calif., GOP Tricksters Get Probation
From the AP:
Two signature gatherers charged with tricking Orange County voters into registering as Republicans were sentenced to three years’ probation....According to prosecutors, the recruiters went to shopping malls and campuses and asked residents to sign petitions for lower taxes or stricter sex offender laws, then tricked them into signing voter registration cards for the Republican party. The registration drive paid up to $10 per registrant.

Even when I was soliciting voter registrations while staffing the Democratic Party booth at the state fair, we were under strict orders to tell people up front that they could check any party they wished, or no party at all. Several times I had to reassure those who registered Republican that we would be violating state law if we failed to submit non-Democratic registrations. We even gave them information on how to check with their county clerk to ensure their voter registration information was correct.
Can't vouch for what was happening at the Republican Party booth, but voter registration is held pretty sacred around here.
We wait until Election Day to buy votes directly with cash and booze - more friendly that way.
