House GOPer: Looking Back, We Coulda Been Nicer

Ah, so the question finally gets answered. Isn't the Republican newfound concern for minority rights a tad hypocritical?

From Roll Call (sub. req.):

When asked why Republicans were now endorsing proposals they long ignored, incoming Chief Deputy Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) conceded the GOP had erred last year.

“In hindsight, I think [Pelosi] was right,” Cantor told reporters, adding that Pelosi is now the one ignoring the resolution, which would require more specific minority rights to control the floor, including the 24-hour requirement to review bills and conference reports.

Cantor, of course, was a member of the Republican leadership in the last Congress.

Well, he can just sit down and shut the fuck up. the American people fired the Repukeliscum on Nov. 7. After 6 months or so, Pelosi MIGHT decide to give them a few priveledges.

If there is no payback, nothing will change. Payback is a bitch, and is part of politics.

This just in: There's a lot of hypocrisy in politics. I'm glad it's finally out in the open, so we can deal with it.

In the meantime, the Democrats get their first 100 hours, and if the GOP wants to complain about that then let the whining begin. Afterward, though, I hope my party will make an effort to show that there's another way than the Gingrish/DeLay/Cheney way.

If we act like grown-ups, then I think we'll be rewarded.

Contrary to GOP whining, the Democrats are already taking plenty of actions to do things differently than the Gingrich/DeLay way, like not hold votes open to twist arms, for example. All the whining is because they're not immediately handing the minority all the rights the GOP refused to allow them for twelve years. Once the Democratic majority has gotten on their feet and the GOP minority has demonstrated a willingness to work for good government, rather than use amendments to screw with things and do partisan posturing, I suspect they will get more rights. This is because Democrats actually care about having a real representative government and running it well, not just about winning and pushing what their base wants, whether the country wants it or not.

Whining and begging for table scraps is so unappealing. I can't wait for someone like Brownback to introduce a measure getting rid of the filibuster in the Senate like he wanted just a year ago. I'm sure he wouldn't "flip flop" now. Damn, it's a matter of principle, the majority decides and all that!

I agree with Long Memory - Let the Dems get their legistation through the Congress as it is now is first. Even thought there is broad public support for the reforms and it will be hard enoughto get it passed with a sufficient majority to overcome any vetos that Bush may throw their way. After that a dialogue can begin with disgraced GOPers. I agree that any minority should not be shut out of the process. I do not want to see another repeat of the past six - make that 12 years - lets give credit where credit is due - Newt Gingrich started us down this unilateral road. The Dems can again become a minority so it behooves them to have meaningful reform in place.

Table scraps only if the GOPers vote 100% with the Democrats. Lets see some of the famous republican unity used to correct all the screw-ups perpetrated on America and the world over the last six years.

minority rights..? We don't NEED no stinking minority rights..the GOP owns the voting machines, we own the Supreme Court and most of the Federal Judges..we own the legislation, the White House....we will NEVER be the minority..we will always be the MAJORITY, it will be a one party rule for ever...Karl gave us his word.......(what do you mean we lost..? Thats not possible...uh, hehe, uh well..how about those minority rights, now..?)

I truly hope that the Dems will pass Pelosi's 2004 Minority Rights bill, without change, in the 101st hour. I'm getting tired of thinking that all politicians are akin to something I need to scrape off my shoe.

My God! Not only is Brownback not going to try to get rid of the filibuster, he's already threatening one against proposed stem cell research legislation. Oh, the hypocrisy! I can't stand these damn obstructionists. Doesn't Brownback realize that he's keeping the Senate from doing the people's work? The majority has spoken Sam and the mandate has been given.

Have the hearings started yet? I'm not anxious or anything, I'm just wondering if the hearings have started yet. I look forward to a new era of courtesy and cooperation with Republicans, as soon as the hearings start.

Dataguy has not cogent argument against the merits of minority rights, therefore he or she chooses to launch an ad hominem attack; insulting the proponents. Dataguy demonstrates that the broad minded tolerance and subtle intelligence of 'Bull' Connor is alive and well. Let's prime the firehoses and dogs to quiet down those pesky minority rights proponents. What a great way to commemorate Martin Luther King's birthday.
